Thermal clothing

What is y'alls opinion of some good thermal underwear. I cant afford the exspensive stuff.

I wore Under Armour on a bear hunt in Newfoundland and almost died. Got hyperthermia, thru up and pissed on myself. I now call it the trusted name in hyperthermia know across the globe. Spend the money on King of the Mountain or Sleeping Indian thank me later.

Been using the Rocky insulates from walmart that are kind of like under armor.
With a little progressive layering, I do not get cold unless I sweat.
undies, Shirt, Drake vest or northface (on really cold days only), and my waxed canvas McAllister jacket.

I don't rely on under armour to keep me warm. That's what my outer and middle layers are for. Under armour for me is for a good base layer without the bulk and it wicks sweat away. As far as what to use other than the expensive stuff it's gonna be about fit and what the weather is. A solid outer shell to keep weather out and then underlying layers to adjust for temp and activity level. As long as there is room for some air to move around and you have enough bulk you should be fine. As for what brand to buy it really doesn't matter. You typically pay for what you get. Cabelas and bass pro usually have some store label stuff that's cheaper and still good quality.

I use patagonia light weight long johns for most stuff. I did buy a set of Underarmour 2.0 for a thicker set of longjohns. They work pretty dang good. I wear them, plus some fleece pants, and longpants under my breathable waders and rarely have much of a problem.

Tell me a little more about those fleece pants. I know they rack up the style points sporting them around the huntin cabin. I am thinking about getting a pair, but I keep thinking I'm gonna get a bad case of swamp booty. Maybe for some cold late season still deer hunting. Are they your go to cold weather set up or more of an all around go to, even in the warmer temps.

I picked up some Wickers brand and Terramar brand base layers from Sierra Trading Post last year, and both have performed real well. I think for the money you can't beat Wickers.

You got hyperthermia or hypothermia? I've never really liked UA due to constriction and it doesn't really insulate well IMO. I wear Patagonia capilene as my stand insulation. I use Icebreaker wool if I'm going to be hiking and sweating - breathes and wicks well, plus it doesn't stink as bad. For those REALLY cold days I put my Sitka gear Kelvin pants and vest or jacket on over my bottom layer. I know this isn't the cheapest option, but IMO its the best. I spent years freezing while hunting with the wrong gear before I realized it was money well spent. It's made those cold days hunting much more enjoyable. Also, keeping you feet, hands, and head covered is essential to staying warm. Get some good gloves, wool socks, and wool beanie. I stay warm with just that and regular outer layer, while some people I hunt with look like the little brother on the Christmas Story with 10 layers and still freeze.

Woolpower ulfrotte.. I've worn all kinds of thermal underwear... Merino wool is by far the best..

I have a pair of Drake Guide BIBS that are fantastic... ha it's a onesey but it gets the job done... its the only bottom layer that i wear... however, duck hunting last year in MS was AKA swattin skeeters and dodging red eyes pirougin in the timber...

The key is to wear a moisture-wicking material as your based layer. Got to keep the moisture off of your skin. Layer-up from there, depending on temps.

As for Underarmour - go for the BassPro Enduraskin as an option. It's the very same material manufactured by Milliken in South Carolina. They are a customer of ours - even was told this by their Sales Rep on a flight a few years ago.

I wear mine as a insulating layer. Mostly I wear them when I plan on standing in water for 3-4hrs. I don't wear neoprene waders so I need the extra warmth. I have some fleece bibs that work well for deer hunting. The fleece pants are just like anykind of lower layer- they will give you the swamp butt in a hurry. They are pretty cheap and a nice addition to the cold weather gear.

I've even worn my bibs inside of my waders which makes them much easier to move and much warmer than neoprene.
