Mouth of the Pearl

Postby laduck » Sun Dec 02, 2001 6:06 pm

Well, I went Saturday morning. This is the fourth weekend of the season in the West zone of La. There were not that many trucks in the parking lot (that should have told me something). Real pretty morning, just no ducks. I did not fire a shot. Let the old girl swim while I picked up the blocks. As Gulfcoast said "the local birds have taken a whipping and they have had no replacements. Maybe things will pick up after the split. I hope that all of you have better luck. Jack

Shoot them sprigs on their first pass!

GHH2000, I also hunted that little creek opening am and pm. I don't put in the creek and go down, but access it from some private land very close. That morning had to be the foggiest morning I have ever seen. I hunted that afternoon by myself primarily to see the birds come in to roost. I can tell at roost if there are any birds there. I saw maybe 20 mallards, 30 teal, and about 1000 woodies. If the ducks are down, you can usually see a couple thousand or so mallards in that roost hole. They weren't there sat. This was the second opener in a row that I didn't kill a duck down there. We packed up and headed home after that. If you happen to see a white truck with a blue and green P on the door down there, stop me next time, we can probably share some knowledge on that place or hunt together. I'll be back down there the 15th.

Hey guys I hunt in the Tuscolmeta Management Area hunting club and all we saw was about 100 woodies flying to the pearl. Let's find a way to keep in touch about what we see without letting the whole world know, otherwise we could get a bit crowed up there.

GHH2000: Congratulations on your son's first duck.

Jack: You are right as rain. I did great Sat., and the ducks were AWOL on Sunday. As always down here, the "dumb local ducks" are all dead by 10:00 a.m. opening day, and it will be slim pickings until the replacement team gets here. I hope that they show up soon.

hey Gadwall,if I see ya,I'll holler at ya.I didn't get off work untill 7 and got there about 8.The fog was still thick as soup.I put in at the ramp and went down by myself,Never again.I felt like a hyper lab pup jumpin from one end of the boat to the other.Couldn't get my motor to idle and couldn't open it up either. Then,I went way down there and got my but turned around coming back up and wound up in a hole I hunted last year.Took awhile to get my bearing and with the help of some guys I met in there was able to finally get back to the main channel to get out.I didn't fire a shot and got so frustrated,I called it a day and went home.Youngest son and I went back Sunday morning and he finished off a woodie that I crippled.I personally believe it's harder to navigate and get through this year than it was last year.Gonna wait the weather out and see what happens with the ducks before I tackle it again.By the way,we saw about 50 mallards Sunday morning, all high and going, two mergansers and a whole bunch of woodies. It should get better.I drive an old Ford F150,baby blue with a white top that looks like it survived WW11.I usually park there at the bridge.btw, the wardens were there both days checking us out and they are checking for the H.I.P stamp this year.If you don't have one,go to Wal-Mart and they should have them. They're free.Hope to run into ya there. Take care!
