Taking my wife somewhere for her birthday October 12-14. Was gonna do New Orleans, but apparently there aren't any good hotels left that weekend (and the Saints aren't even in town then). Any ideas? I thought about Fairhope, AL but have never been there and not sure how much there is to do. Not doing Memphis...

We usually go once every year or so, but it's during the summer and we spend some time on the lake and at the water/amusement park. There are some decent restaurants in the area and if either of you like to golf there are some nice courses in Hot Springs Village. Hot Springs is alright, just not near the stuff to do there like New Orleans. What about Atlanta? Northern Georgia is nice, Clayton area. Highlands, NC? Nashville?

Amtrak has a train that runs to Chicago daily. You can jump on the train, spend a couple days in Chicago, and come back home in a long weekend.

Leaves will be changing in the Smokey Mountains...Orlando is ALWAYS fun. Hot Springs is VERY nice. Take a fishing pole if the wife will allow. The race track has a casino. The Crater of Diamonds is down the road a ways across the street from some excavated burial mounds. AWSOME crystel mines in the area....good sight seeing and shopping too. Amusement park I believe will be closed by then. Fairhope is nice in the spring...need to catch one of their festivals. Restraunt with " throwed rolls" is in the area...good stuff

Head to Hwy 30A between Destin and PCB. Not crowded and beautiful that time of year. Great food also. Lots of different communities to stay in . Good deals also on home and condo rentals or check out Watercolor Inn for a hotel deal. I am partial to Watercolor but all the communities are nice.

Call an airline or travel agent see if you can find some ridiculously low round-trip fare to some big city hub. Pheonix, NYC, San Francisco, Boston, Denver, Salt Lake, Minneapolis, Vegas, San Diego. Food, shopping, anything, nothing. Fly out Thursday or Friday, home on Sunday.

+1 on Hot Springs. If you want a kinda laid back weekend, nice town, Hot Springs is it. Wife and I went there a few years ago for anniversary, and I got there somewhat often for work.

Make friends in New Orleans. Not having a place to stay in NOLA without booking a room is inexcusable.
That time of year, I'd take advantage of someplace that has a little fall color. I just got back from a U.S. Park Service concession on Shenandoah Nat'l Park, right off the Skyline Dr. I have a hard time imagining a chick not liking it up there, especially in the Fall, though the dates you're considering will probably be before peak color.
