need a little help here....

So, I’m sitting here eating lunch and one of the nurses has brought hers….chicken livers, black-eyed peas and a sweet potato.

Now, I’ve come to appreciate the sweet potato as one of the most versatile food items since the irish discovered the potato...the regular one.

In any case, this got me to pontificating on the sweet potato’s nasty step child – the YAM. I hate a dam yam though I must digress. Upon further review, ruminations and postulations, it got me to wondering if the yam is an entity in and of itself - meaning is there a dam yam plant somewhere? - or just a cross dressing sweet potato. And, if so, should I be mad at the sweet potato for taking part in the dam yam’s construction OR appreciate it further for the versatile little spud it is?

I, myself, have been unable to come to any conclusion on the matter and would appreciate your input.

Thanks, justin

In the immortal words of Curly Horowitz (later Curly Howard) - "I Yam what I Yam!"

On another side note - those Stooges who began their careers in Vaudeville, once performed in Jackson, MS back in the 20's.

Now, back to our regular scheduled programming...

True yams are native to Africa and parts of Asia.

i hope everyone sees the confusion of the stupid yam.

let's review the points jimbobo has made shall we:

1) there is a yam - a true yam to be precise - but it ain't found here, but it is found here in "places"
2) the true yam is really a nyami or maybe any number of other names....but, it's a yam.
3) if you ask for a yam, your booty better be prepared for a sweet potato
and lasly, and in my opinion, the most damning 4) yams are "sweeter and more starchy" yet we have to "candy" the suckers up to make the stupid things edible.

I'm certain of it.....i hate a dam yam

Weeeeeelllll now. Since we've hereby settled that bit of earthshattering tribulation for the masses, what are your thoughts upon the plantane? You know, that South American fibrous complex carbohydrate that looks like a banana on steroids. And for the record, you'd better not try and eat that thing without cooking it first.

Though there is a difference, the apparent distinction is "yam" to Yankees = "sweet potato" to Southerners.

I think the confusion does not lie at the point of The Dam Yam, but rather ,the confusion is how something like synthetic Mary, which obviously,ya gotta be smoking, has not led you to eat , well .... anything

So.... since we routinely slice and candy sweet potatoes and call them yams would it be politically correct to call them African American YAMS.

Dam a Yam

It is spelled Platain. And I believe they are native to central American. Spanish countries. And when they turn black, can be fried and are some kind of fine. My wife(Cuban/Mexican) cook them to eat with rice all the time
