If we want to spray and kill whatever is there (woody/viney/weedy/grassy/etc.), what is the best and most economical to do so - Roundup/24d/Garlon 4/other/mix? Not too worried about drift, but there are young oak trees around edges. I guess it would be better to bushhog first and spray a week or two later?

Probably the cheapest and safest is a super high rate glyphosate. I would run at least a half gallon to the acre with plenty of water volume. Adding 2,4-D to the mix will help for sure.

I'm giving you the agriculture experience. There are plenty of forestry guys that might have better input.

I would bushhog first like you said, then spray a day or so later. I would start with about an 8% glyphosate/2,4-D @ 1 gal/acre solution. No need in dumping the jug out if it doesn't require it. Give it 2 weeks and see what is still there. It may just take 2 applications or so. This mixture should take out the majority of unwanted grasses, broadleaf weeds, and some woody plants. Bigger woody plants may need a triclopyr product or hack-and-squirt. I would think this is an "economical" but effective approach.

I wouldn't spray a day after mowing. No plant is gonna take up herbicide effectively after injury or while stressed.

duckkiller - is Diquat still available for the average redneck? I used that years ago, effective is a vast understatement, and it didn't take much at all.

like wingman said, mow then wait till late summer/ fall once you have significant re-sprout. Plants will be expending lots of energy trying to put foliage on, Pop them with a good shot of herbicide and you will have good control of non desirable. Its to hot humid for Garlon right now, it will drift bad above 87 deg. But that is a really good product if used during right conditions.(and it wont hurt grasses, say if you mow then plant millet).

Not really sure, my supplier has my license number on hand so all I ever do is send my spray tech up there and pick the stuff up. I'll check into it

gramoxone - awesome stuff....attacks cholorphyl on contact, no cholorphyl no life...burndown starts immediately and results can be seen in as little as 2hrs.
.....but, it will eat through cotton fabric, so handle to osha standards....splashed on shorts while pouring in the mixing hopper (er, ah mean....it splashed on my long pants...) and by the time it took to fill 2/200 gal tanks from a water trailer, it had eaten a hole in the fabric the size of the splash mark. had to run home to shower, as it was in a precarious spot..... didn't want it to taint ma'nads - that stuff is toxic.

Diquat is not gramoxzone. That's paraquat.

Anyone can buy diquat or the brand name reward. And yes it heats up round up.

doh...saw 'quat and read it as paraquat...gramoxone is not di, it is para.

If it's vines, I'd hit it with banvel or dicamba this fall. Anything else is futile.
