I know this is a newb question but I am asking anyway. I know I wont pay sales tax for the boat in AL but when I come to MS to register the boat I will pick up the tab then correct? Then when I register the trailer I can register the boat? Any pointer would help on this topic. I am totally lost to this because i have never delt with a new boat buy. Thanks for any responses

Yes, you will pay applicable Sales Tax at your local Tax Collectors office. You should only need the Bill-of-Sale and your checkbook for this process. I believe you will also need the Origin of Manufacturer certificates for the boat, motor and trailer. Then, you will need to register the boat thru MDWFP.com Don't forget to inform your Insurance Agent of this purchase prior to picking up (for the just-in-case).

Depending on whether or not you are paying cash for the boat, will decide whether the title application will be through the Tax Collector or your Lienholder.

Am hopeful I've got this correct - if not, someone else can confirm.

Have fun!

What all do you have to register through MDWFP besides the boat itself?

That's it. Just the boat.

Search threads for trailer tags. Big discussion here recently.

I register outboard and trailer, too. That way, if somebody snatches the motor off, you will have the serial number on record with the State. Doesn't cost extra to register them. There is a place near the bottom of the mdwfp registration form to put the motor and trailer info on there.

If you are buying from an individual there is no sales tax.

Correct - no sales tax applicable if you are buying as "used" from an individual. Though, he did mention a "new boat buy." Please clarify.

Correct, I just walked in the courthouse with a Bill of Sale from the Individual and they only charged me like $35 for a trailer tag. I asked if I had to pay tax and the lady said no.......she didn't say why though.

Because it's not their place ro collect it. If the boat was purchased from out of state, even if it was from an individual MS sales tax will have to be paid on the selling amount or the value of the boat only before you can get it registered with the state. Boat registration requires proof of MS sales tax being paid on the hull. You will pay this at registration or you won't get it registered in this state. Unless something has changed since I quit selling boats.

Boat registration doesn't require proof of sales tax.

Rob, you need to go read your own registration rules. It's in black and white on how to register a boat! Must show proof of MS sales tax being paid. Highlighted in big bold red print at that!

The last five boats that I've registered in MS only required the Bill of Sale. The were bought used from AR, TN, MS, and LA. If it is a new boat then sales tax will have to be payed regardless of where you bought it. If the boat is used, print off a Bill of Sale from the mdwfp website and go on about your business.

Fella's, not to hijack this discussion, but do "all" boats have to be registered? Example, I have a little 8', 2 man bass buster boat that has a 30lb trolling motor only... do I have to register that? Or any boat with an outboard?

Thanks in advance.

If you do not put it in public waters you do not have to register the boat...
