Hog hunting sat and had a 1911 .45 cal on my side. Stepped off my Ranger and the sumbitch fired. Scarred the piss out of me, grace of God i didnt get hit. Only thing i can think of is a stick cocked the hammer and the latch on holster got on the safety. Never had crossed my mind before that could happen. If your toting a 1911, i suggest getting a holster that totally covers the gun and cant engage the safety. Could have gotten ugly, real quick, and so preventable. Just something to chew on, imitating Barney Fife aint cool.

Glad you're ok. With all the safeties on a typical 1911, I'm amazed it happened. I guess I'm as guilty as the next man, relying too much on a gun 'safety'. What kind of 1911 is it that went off on you?

Talk about a perfect storm. That is crazy! What make and model 1911? Any trigger work or anything done to it? Were you carrying cocked/locked or hammer down? Thumb safety was disengaged too? What kind of holster was it?

S&W, has had some trigger work for competition shooting by the guy i got it off of. Uncle Mikes holster. Hammer was down when i put it in holster. We had bayed a pig in some thick stuff just before, i think a stick cocked the hammer and strap on holster got loose and looped over safety

Just a thought here. If it was worked on for competition, some of those guys do away with the grip safety. That way if their grip gets off a little the gun still goes bang. You might check that by pulling the trigger without depressing the grip safety (preferably on an empty chamber )

Also, if you were carrying on an empty chamber, you cant engage the thumb safety. Is it possible that something caught the hammer and pulled it back but not far enough to peepee it? As a result, the hammer fell with enough force for a discharge?

Had a young guy here killed last year on a hog hunt. Best friend got off 4 wheeler and the gun fell out of holster and went off. It was a revolver I think. Same situation it was cocked in heavy brush. The guy was 19 or 20 I think and both were regular hunters.

I rarely carry with one in the chamber even having a Springfield XD with no hammer and the palm grip safety. Maybe it is my inexperience compared to some of you, but either on my hip or in the door of the truck, holstered or not, just feels like the constant possible danger of a chambered round outweighs the once in a lifetime possible danger of having to defend myself.

1911 Ruger?

Have you contacted Ruger about a replacement or repair? I would be scared to death to carry a gun that would fire when dropped!

I don't know how the Ruger's are built but the "drop fire" is why Colt put in the firing pin block safety in their series 80 guns. If the Ruger is built like the pre-series 80 guns, there may not be a "fix" for it because that is how it is built
