I just returned form the Vet where I had to put to sleep my 11 yr old Black Lab. I guess as hunters we all know this day will come but I just wasn't expecting it today. He started to decline last week by not being able to walk very well and I thought his arthritis was just getting worse. He then lost his appetite and did nothing but lay around and acted real lethargic. The vet said he probably was having kidney or liver failure and was nothing he could do for him. I will wait for the kids to come home from school so they can say their last goodbye and then burry him wrapped in his favorite comforter he slept on in his dog house. For those of you who have dogs, give them an extra pat or scratch on the tummy today because you never know when they will be gone. He probably retrieved over 500 ducks for me and I remember his last was a drake Wood Duck at Matthews Brake in January. The pictures I took are all that I have of him now and will always keep one on my desk. I hope he is now swimming back to my boat with a big ol greenhead in his mouth in dog heaven. Rebel, I will never forget you boy!

Sorry, had to do the same thing several years ago, time will heal, i went and got a new puppy, its never been the same. Cassey was the dog boys dream of, if theres a dog heaven, shes there.

losing a hunting partner can sure pull at the heart strings for a time. You'll always think of this dog and remember the good and bad.

The one question that always helped me through this type of event is:

Would you better have never had the animal and not feel as you do now? Or, have the animal and all the memories that stay with you long after their gone.

I was always grateful for the memories..

I've always told my kids that 'where you find love, one day you will find loss'...this goes for girlfriends, boyfriends, wives, husbands, and animals. Sorry for your loss. One day hopefully you will find love again.

I am sorry to hear that and I know how you feel. I had to put my 11 year old golden, "Annie", down on Jan. 22 of this year. It's the hardest thing I ever had to do. Hang in there and again, I am sorry about the bad news.

keep your head up big guy.... ole reble is in doggie heaven watching ducks work as we speak. sorry to hear about him... i got alot of bellies to rub tonite i got 3 labs (all 3 colors) we will say a prayer for ole reble...

I had to put down my 11 year old black male in January.

He wasn't a hunter, but he gave me many great years and fathered a beautiful female that hunts with me all the time.

Sorry about your loss. I had to put my 12 year old lab down about 3 years ago and it felt as though we had lost a family member. About a month after Jack died, I got a lab puppy. Chief did not replace Jack, but getting another dog seemed to help fill the void. The bad thing about dogs is that they just don't live long enough. My deepest sympathy for your loss.

I feel for you and your family. My girl will be 12 in July and her age is really showing now. My wife and I have no children so Boeuf has been a hunting partner and a member of this family. It will be a sad day when she leaves us. I will be thinking of you and your family. Jack

as I read your post I cant help but get tears in my eyes from the memories of my old HUNTING buddy that left us a year ago.....sorry to hear about your loss.........
