Red Dot worth it?
Red Dot worth it?
Too difficult to sight in, easy to knock off line, pointless? Tell me if its worth it.

You answered the question yourself.rawalley wrote:thats what i was thinkin... why do you need a scope on a shotgun? other then it lookin cool.
Ive never understood why having one on there either except for the same reason you just gave. Only the cool kids have it!

I always know when I see a topwater turkey hunter. A scope is a dead give away.

Re: Red Dot worth it?
I posted a story of the best turkey that I have ever killed, a little over a year ago, under Mississippi River Monarchs. I would have felt like a complete idiot trying to hit that great turkey flying past me with a red dot. Turkey hunting and red dots don't mix.

I don't know about topwater....
I personally don't use one,but some of the best turkey hunters I know use them. It's not for everyone that's for sure.

If your gonna use a scope might as well use a rifle.

Ask anyone who consistently kills his limit of birds every year and I bet you not a single one of them has a scope on their gun.bottomland84 wrote:I don't know about topwater....

But hey on a lighter note we find something else you and I can disagree on. That is your sole purpose on this board right?

the sight on a gun has nothing to do with how good a hunter you are. i say if a red dot helps you shoot more accurate, go for it. a dead turkey is a dead turkey,
who cares if you use a "topwater" scope or or a brass bead? i mean seriously? everybody knows REAL turkey hunters have the turkey foot track on the back glass.

Re: Red Dot worth it?
Well, i guess i'm a topwater turkey hunter... I've had a red dot on my gun for about 5 years, and will ALWAYS have one. I've killed about 55 with my setup in these last five years, as well. My handloads are so tight, you have to have a fully adjustable sight to dial them in. It definately works for me. I've killed them standing, walking, running, flying, and i would shoot one sitting on eggs if gobblers did that. Don't knock someone just because their setup isn't like yours...

Re: Red Dot worth it?
Well, I've killed 19 turkeys with the gun without one but I've got to put something on it. Had this expensive picatinny rail put on it for nothing if I don't. That should clear up the topwater discussions. Probably just put rifle site on it. Didn't even have a bead on gun before and I just got tire of shooting them at the base of the neck when I was trying to earhole them.

Topwater?? Seriously, what does it matter what gun a guy uses if he can kill a turkey or 3 with it? Some of the best turkey hunters I know use a scope on their gun.
