No, but I had a fraternity brother at MSU who was called "Catdaddy". You don't simply meet this guy. He is sort of an 'experience'.

Jefferson's Reserve is by far the best and smoothest I've ever tried. I won't drink anything else. I can assure you that you would not be disappointed.

+1...but at least they aren't mixing it with Dr Pepper. :P Be the first to admit I can't tell Charter from Makers or Knob from Basil Hayden's, but I like them all equally based on the following thought. I either walk out excited about a good bottle of whiskey or a cheaper tab, either will lead to destructive behavior, flacid-ness and a headache. The label just determines how much money I'm out and how much water is going in the glass with it.

If a felt bag and some string was a criteria, I'd be all over crown. Then only thing Canada's gotten right in the past 20 years was pam anderson.

Showing off has a lot do with it, I agree. If you make something of quality and charge a lot for it folks will buy. Especially rich folks.
And nothing is worse than a guy mixing a good whiskey with coke. . That's what they make Heaven Hill for.

My bro in law used work at a liquor store. He came across what is called an "oops bottle" one day. It's a bottle of makers where they dipped more wax than normal. I can't remember the chances of getting one are but I think it worth a few dollars. His is a liter bottle, I've seen em go for 250.

i bet that is an incredible tasting scotch! the 18yo is one of my favorite scotches. the smoothness masks the alcohol so well that it will sneak up on you if you aren't careful.

I drink alot of bourbon, but had never heard of the stuff. Went out and bought some and wasnt that impressed. This year I have heard a discussion or two about Pappy Van Winkle and have never heard so much talk as in the last 2 weeks. You would think if'n it was as good as e'rrybody says, or 26yr old per bottle, then it would have been talked about alot more over the year on our annual whiskey discussions. It's like some people just pick something expensive or "the cool thing" and say "yeah thats good stuff and it's my favorite". If'n I were a bettin man, and as hard to come by as it is, I would venture to say that some people who are out saying they are drankin on a $300 bottle of bourbon are full of it................I'm not sayin....I'm just sayin
I hear ya man. I put these pricks in the same category as those pretentious sumbeeches that wear McAlister or Filson when a $25 coat from wally world will keep you just as dry and warm. Sheesh, the nerve of some people!

actually, a similar thread comes up pretty much yearly, and pappy has been mentioned quite often in those threads. a quick search of "pappy van winkle" yielded a thread from 2010 and 2 from 2009, in which several folks talked about their enjoyment of said bourbon. four roses wasn't heard much about until a year or so ago, simply b/c you couldn't get it here. there distribution at the time stopped at the the Tenn line if memory serves. after the '09 season, i know of several LLDC members that proclaim it the next best thing to holy water. I stand by my original statement......i've tried to like that leper piss and can't stand it.....its' thin, and would be better served as paint thinner (which i've tried, and it sucked at that too).

pappy is a good bourbon that's not reaching out to dollar store shoppers. it's real close to what i like in a bourbon.

my everyday bourbon, which is also my special occasion bourbon, and the one i prefer on at sundown on sundays is Elijah Craig. i like what the good reverend offers in a bourbon - nutty, woody, leathery notes on teh sniff test that melt into caramel and chocolate flavors as it is drank. there's not the heat of "alcohol" typical of many bourbons which inadvertently ruin a good bourbon in my opinion.

in any case, pursuant to the above rant, i've bought 4 bottles of pappy this year (all early in the year) but look for it each and everytime i go to the liquor store. is it worth the pricetag, i dunno.....i try not to live a life based off a 25% coupon.

regarding the above......some folks like nice houses, long legs on chics and fast cars.........others are fine smoking ready rolls out the back window of their double wide.......neither is right or wrong, just different.................and, i hope to be buried in my filson stuff one day. which, could happen unless my grandchildren want to wear it. i'm not sure the same can be said for many other clothing brands.

as my good friend, scholar, and poet lauriet deltaduckman is oft read sayin..........in ain't sayin'...........i'm just sayin'

Good clothing is a horse of a different feather, JaMak. Think you said that somewhat tongue in cheek. I seem to have to replace whiskey just as fast no matter how high quality it is. A quality jacket can see you 25 years or more and is worth being repaired if something does tear up on it.

To me there is a sentimental value and a sense of pride that comes with using the same stuff, year after year, and continuing to take care of it so that it may become a keepsake for a loved one once I am gone. My grandad passed when I was 11 and I was never lucky enough to hunt with him. I am going to pick up his 1950's JC Higgins shotgun case today from a Soles & Heels, where it is getting the leather reconditioned and restitched to the canvas in several places. I'll only use it on dove hunts, but to me it's worth taking care of just for once a year use.
