I was talking to a local angler today who commented that Fourmile Lake was significantly clearer now than it has ever been in recent history, due to the planting of 4,000 acres of trees along the Bear Creek watershed...Corps mitigation land.
It is give and take. Truth be told, if it were not for some drainage in the past, very few of us would be living/hunting in the Delta today. We would still be taking ferries across the rivers to travel mud roads through the swamp.

Now we are getting somewhere.
Dan and I agree that the Ross Barnett area was much prettier before the lake was built, and we agree that the Delta has been forever changed by the levees and channels (who I think the COE primarily built and dug).
I think we also agree that there is no good or legitimate reason for the current dredging of the Tallie, or at least the percieved benefit is not worth the financial and environmental costs.
For those of us who care(unlike BR549 who obviously does not)......Dan, could you tell us who is on or in charge of the levee boards and water mgt. district that covers, governs or controls the area where the dredging is taking place and how did those people get put on the board or put in charge? Also, how do you get in touch with them to try to put a stop to what they are doing?
I might can agree that the COE have taken some giant steps for natural resource conservation, but if what Dan and Mud say are true, these steps have not been taken out of choice (given the claim that the COE really has no choice); rather, Congress has mandated the COE to take these steps.
But isn't that kinda like killing most of the American Indians, taking all of their land; then, giving them a few blankets and reservations on the most worthless land you can find and bragging about all the good things you have done for the Indians? I doubt the Indians would agree.
COE = Kudzu

Correct but at the mandate of congress who was lobbied by private business men looking to make $ in the Delta

Levee boards and water mgmt districts all have a board of commisioners that are charged with focusing the efforts of these agencies. They represent the desires of the constituents within their district, who are going to be primarily farmers and in favor of flood control. However, many are very conservation minded and looking for a middle ground to balance flood control, water quality, and wildlife habitat.
They pretty much all have websites I would guess thats the easiest way to get in touch with them.

So BR549 is on one of them drain the Delta boards? Now I understand why he doesn't "give a rat's booty" about this post.
What board are you on and did you vote for or lobby Congress to Mandate the COE to dredge the Tallie?
How did you get on the board and how do you contact its members?
Most importantly, do you know what board or district covers or is assigned to the area where the dredging is taking place and how we can contact those responsible?

Well if you are so damn smart You do you're homework and you shall see. It ain't that hard to find out! I never said I didn't give a rats booty about the future and cares of our land. Just tired of folks trying to tell us HOW to do things when you don't know jack schitt about the problems we have in the delta!

And further more if you like wearing the clothes(made from cotton) on your back and eating the meals you eat that are produced from the grain the farmers grow here in MS the please shut the hell up and people that do know a little something about it handle it! I've never said the coe has never made a mistake. I've never said any of the joint boards hasn't made a mistake either. But, if all the tree huggers and the so called conservationist would let the people out there do there jobs there just might not be so much waste. You figure out a problem, start to address it with a solution and then you have to change your solution five times just to passify some bigshot that's what causes all the problems! This whole Yazzoo/MS valley watershed was built in reverse order of what it should have been because of input from people that should have kept their mouths shut and let the engineers do the job right the first time. Now it IS a real problem. One that is not going to ever go away, and one that is going to have to be dealt with on a continuing basis. Yes there are some things that are gonna have to be done even though some people (even board members) are not going to want to do them, but that's just the way it's gonna have to be.

BR549 I appreciate your service to the public for whatever board you are on. I am sure you take your responsibilities seriously. There has to be checks and balances in this country. If the COE had not been reined in, Arkansas duck hunters would not have the Cache River NWR and this country would have lost a valuable wintering ground for millions of waterfowl. I do not own land in the delta so I can't speak from your perspective on this subject. However, my money is partly paying for that project. I want to see that govenment money is not used for a project that will cause an evironmental disaster as it has in the past. Two wrongs do not make a right. If there has to be constant dredging to keep the Tallahatchie open then perhaps the money needs to be spent on other solutions. Maybe we need a Tallahatchie NWR running the lenth of the river with green zones on each side. It has been done before.

My money is too! I pay taxes in MS too you know! Im sorry bout the rant guys but here lately we've been catchin hell bout some problems that shouldn't be problems. I really wish a lot of the projects that have been done in the past were either not done or at least done differently. But they weren't, and now we have to deal with them the best way we can! You can't please everyone. So Im gonna shut up about it now before I really get pizzed!
