I know a few folks that hunt around the area and many of them are saying this is nothing new, there have been deer in the area for the last few years exhibiting the same symptoms as this. I think this is one of the chicken little situations. The sky is not falling, let this run its course, anything we do will be pissing in the wind.

I see this opinion a lot and it makes me wonder.

For the sake of discussion, what do you think things will look like once this runs its course? When will it have completed running its course? And those predictions are based on what?

Do some research on how hunting is now in Wisconsin and other states that have it. Sure......none of them are Ms, but millions of people still hunt and eat their deer meat.

Not being argumentative, but I can’t tell that it has run its course in WI. Lot of different ways to interpret their results, but I struggle to find the success story there.

No worries man....I wasn’t saying that it had run its course, but it hasn’t ended the deer hunting way of life up there. It’s still as big as ever.

For the sake of discussion, I think it is going to look a lot like it does now. MS is not the first place that has ever had CWD. As stated before, this disease has been present for decades in other states. The states that are already affected still have deer, deer season, the hunters eat venison. Yes it will kill some deer and yes it will have some effect on the population but not catastrophic. My question to you is what do you think killing 300, 600, 900, ect. deer is going to accomplish? Do you think it is going to eradicate CWD from MS?

If it can survive in the soil for 1-2 yrs and a deer can have it for 12-18m before it gets to the terminal phase - you can’t control it. It will spread slowly and steadily. It may not spread too far but rest assured we have more than 1 cwd deer in the state.

A vaccine would be ideal but I don’t think we have the science for that.

I caught a portion of a news segment on local Jackson television AM news program this morning that no new evidence of CWD has been discovered since the initial discovery.

Does anyone have any more information?

I think that’s all there is right now. I believe that was results from the first 65 deer tested. I would be curious to see the locations of the tested deer just to see how close they were to ground zero.

I’d accept a little collateral damage from CWD if it meant that baiting was illegal again.
