OFFSEASON ?,..... Ain't no such thing !
Birds are all over the place...birds are gobbling...the gobblers we are seeing are still in the company of six to twelve hens each. My wife and I each have two down and one to go. Even if we limit out, we will still see the season through trying to get second and third turkeys for the children. What a great sport!

I finally went Saturday morning in Silver Creek. They would gooble a few times (enough for me to get in on them). I get setup, call a few more times, get one or two responces, and they shut up. I had one some kinda hot and bothered, had him on the way in and he shut up. Waited 30 - 45 minutes and nothing. I think he got cut off by the plethera of hens I heard all morning.
Looking for 2 duck calls from Dominic Serio of Greenwood (ones for Novacaine)

Hey Rip Em, yea there bouts in J.D. They are just now starting to act right over here. But i went scouting another place this morning after the hunt and watch a longbeard herd about seven jakes around and eighty acre field for about two hours. I have never seen anything like it.

teul, my advice is to be persistent..... if you don't get on that longbeard early right off the roost, he may be getting up with hens... if that happens, after he has been with them sometimes only a short time, he will completely shut up... if that happens then you need to stop calling and just sit tight... try to keep sight of them is a good thing but waiting till late in the morning is your best bet... the hens are getting on the nest by now and that makes finding a lonely tom in the afternoon easier.. i have most all of my luck by gettin on the bird in the roost and killing him within 1 hour of being on the ground.. sometimes i'll get lucky and get on a bird late in the morning without hens but calling a tom off hot hens is a chore and your odds are dramatically lower... patience and persistence....
my style of hunting is not very patient i admit.... someone once told me this "somewhere out there is a tom that is on fire and acting crazy and will come to you, you just gotta find him" i am willing to leave a struttin tom that is not responding to me because he is with hens, in the chance i will find one without hens and will respond to me...... everyone has there own style.... i know guys that will find some tracks/dookie/feathers and sit down and stay there all day and never move in the hopes a bird will come through there..... me on the other hand, i will walk and walk to find one and i like to cut the distance down... i like to sit down and within 10 min that bird be dead...... less distance = less calling = more productice enjoyable hunts...... not to say i don't like to watch and observe all the fun things that go along with good hunts.. gobblin, struttin, drumming etc... but... that is just my style.... you gotta find what works for you.... as a result, over the course of the year, i will spook a few birds because i get close... that has happened twice this year to me and it is a constant struggle to slow down and set up a lil sooner..
hunting private land of course always increases your odds as well.... it is a big diff hunting a bird that has been spooked/called to/ or even shot at, this happens a great deal after the first two weeks of the season.. if you want more success, get access to private land or scout public more and take your vacation early.. hunt public land early and your private land later, by that time public land birds are so wary to your call.....my style may not work on public land birds.
another piece of advice........ how many times have you been in a situation and you really didn't know exactly what to do... do i get up and move or is that bird just sitting there in sight waiting. if you get up you will spook him or he may be 1/2 a mile away by now... what do you do????
NOTHING.... if you don't know what to do... dont' do anything.... having success isn't neccesarily doing all the right things..... it is eliminating the wrong things.. if that makes sense to you!!
also when you are walking...... you are still hunting... covering ground should be almost just like you are squirrel hunting... lookin and listening like that bird is just over the next ridge... the bird i killed this morning wasn't gobbling at the moment and i spotted him (in the woods) before he saw me.. i set up and called him in.... that happens a bunch.. i see him before he see's me........
