Re: Memphis high school coach fired locker room rant
I'd hire him if I were looking for a coach, made me want to take the field again after all these years. I guess its just the differences in people, some respond and perform better after that type of pressure and others fold. A coach with that much passion for the game and love for his players will be successful somewhere!

Rediculous! I actually ate Thanksgiving dinner with him last year. Very nice guy. He was actually a very quiet person, but there's nothing like contact sports to bring out the fire in someone. I don't think he will have a bit of trouble finding a new job, but it's unfortunate for him to lose his job at the best public high school in Shelby county.
It would be one thing if this was a private school where they are stricter on bad language, but this is a dang public school. And if you get your feelings hurt by a strong motivational speech, football is not for you. In fact, I'm pretty sure testicals are not for you. Turn in your man card.

Amen. Ive never understood the science behind trying to shelter your kid from the world anyway. There gonna experience it one way or another when they fly the nest.bhuggins wrote:From what I read, the kid invited someone from another team into the locker room and apparently used the wrong color of tape to tape him up. That's where the trespassing thing came from.
That said, it's sad we live in a world that is tolerant of everything from homosexuality to abortion but a coach loses his job for language that can be found on cable television any night of the week. Not condoning the language, but it's still not worthy of losing his job. Especially in a locker room situation.

I really don't give a crap about what the man said or why he said it, but the fact that he resigned and wasn't fired tells me A.) He knows he was wrong and is taking his come uppins like a man, or B.) This isn't the first time he's been to the principals office and they didn't want anybody to dig any deeper.
I don't feel like this is a firable offense if it's the first time, and being the caliber of teacher he appears to be I believe the administration would stand behind him if that were the case. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but I don't think we're getting the whole story here.

I've always thought the we didn't need to raise kids of the world but they sure better be able to live in the world. Big difference. We teach our kids about the things that are going on out there because they are going to need to be prepared for it.TODO wrote:Amen. I don't condone his language but want to make this point. If you played football or similar sports in high school you will know what I'm talking about. Spending countless hours, days, and years busting your tail on a field with the same guys eventually leads to a feeling of comradery and family. Your teammates become your brothers and your coach like your dad away from home. I was lucky enough to have a coach who was a deacon in my church and a good man. Still, he was not perfect and would cuss every now and then. We were mature enough to still respect him and take the lectures as motivation. The kids who tried out for football and quit after a year because they didn't like being told what to do or couldn't handle a good butt chewing are still quitting things today. The problem with some kids is that they think everybody should "respect" them and not make them do anything they don't feel like doing. When I was growing up (only 28 now) the only people who got respect was adults. When they talk you keep your mouth shut and listen. The kid who did this didn't care about the coach's language. He had spiteful intentions of getting the coach fired because of some other reason I'm sure. Sissified kids.

I didn't mean to ruffle anyone's feathers. All I was saying is that they are just words. Some chose to use them, some don't. Kids these days are exposed to many more things these days that are immoral, indecent, and lewd. I don't think a coach using a few words that some or many find offensive is what society should be woried about these days. Almost every TV show or song on the radio contains some sort of language or sexually suggestive action(s). Yet, we are worried about a football coach using @!#$ or %&*#.
