1972- Dropped out of a ranchero to go walk up mallards along a willow lined ditch at the outlet of Black Bayou on the Tallahatchie River in the Free State of Tallahatchie. 28 ga. remington, rubber knee boots,Yentzen on the lanyard, elmer fudd hat, oversized goose down jacket (size xl made me look like the michellin man in old school camo), brown jersey gloves, maybe 98 lbs soaking wet. They outsmarted me 3 days in a row but on the 4th day i put the superfreak duck ninja belly crawl on em and have been going thru duck detox every since. :D

In 1972, I killed my first duck at a little place in Tallahatchie County that's pretty well-known nowadays: York Woods.

I killed my first duck in the Pearl River swamp 1999.Which was a ole hoody witch I mounted and is proudly displayed in my living room. And It's gone from a passion to obsession. One day I may make it a way of life.

in all seriousness...1985...lead was still legal.... hunted an old beaver slough and shot at anything with webbed feet that would come in....on of my Dad's buddies had a black lab named Powder....Ole powder was pretty much just there to make us LOOK like we might know what we were doing.... Red ball waders were cold as HE!! and I'm pretty sure I fell in twice that morning...I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever done.....

Christmas break in '74 my Grandfather took me out on the pond at the farm in Kansas. Think I had on some old Itasca hip boots that all the older cousins had outgrown, and an Army surplus field jacket 4 sizes too big. It was a couple more years and a few inched of growth till I was tall enough before he would take me on the hunts at the river and green timber. We actually would go on Christmas morning before the present opening, and we'd have fresh roast duck for Christmas dinner.

I don't duck hunt. Never really have. Got in-laws family land in one pretty popular brake and 3 or 4 more spots as well where I could go.

Started in 1994 when mallards were thick in the hills. Its strange how the numbers have dropped off over here. We used to scout using an airplane and back then we decided how many people to carry by the number of ducks in certain holes, not by if there were any ducks around. Now i don't waste the fuel to fly, they just aren't here, just drive to the delta. Only three bands, bull pintail, drake mallard and hen mallard with many, many hours in the field.
