I know spots around Vburg that are +100ft.
That's just on the down stream side of a rock dyke, but there are some really deep spots.

You are correct sir. For Jeff, I was speaking about the stretch below Venice in the SW Pass.

Hunting this weekend brought up something of high importance when crossing to the other side when a towboat is on the scene.

1) Never try to outrun one and then cut across in front. If your motor goes out, those things don't stop on a dime!

2) The main thrust of those props is downriver. The boil from those engines goes a long way down river. Don't simply wait until it has past. You will feel the swells from that prop wash a long time after it passes. We waited 10 minutes after one went past this weekend and still had spray in our face.

"Ole Man" definetly is not for everybody. It can be the best there is, but it definetly has risk. For me the risk outweight the "public option." I grew up on it, and it shows a me new trick every time I go out. Here are some suggestions. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER go with a S or SW wind (currenlty or predicted while you will be out). Never in a boat less than 17'. Always with your equipment at 100 %, and a full compliment of safety gear. Allways with a float plan, and better with another boat. Use your boat trailer (the shorter the boat ride the better). Learn the water you want to hunt in the summertime. The water is typically lower, and you can gps sand bars, rock dikes, and other hazzards. Pay attention to water levels, two foot a day deviations up or down are not uncommon, (the rock dike you ran over yesterday without problem is now fixing to take your lower unit off !) Like a lot of the previous post warn, it is a very serious place and you don't likely get a second chance. Spend some time out there with someone who knows it WELL, get to know the water, and then weigh the advantages disadvantages. Again it can be unbelievable out there, both in a good way, and a bad way. Good luck

Not the intention. I have been doing rescue / dive recovery on the river for fifteen years. I REALLY dont want to pick you up clinging to a sack of decoys en route to LA, but it is better than suiting up and diving for you (if diving is an option). The point is that people have hunted the river as long as people have hunted. It can be hunted safely but you better have the right equipment, knowledge, and experience. Do the homework, get your equipment up to speed, get the safety gear, learn the water, and come on out. Just mind your manners !
