Hammer, I'm gonna have to agree with DD you need to get a couple thousand acres and show all them tobacco spittin ARMPIT smellin plantation owners how to really make a livin at farming. Since the farming is so pitiful around here, go up to the midwest where the combines get choked out trying to pick all them beans, and after that lease that field at a super reasonable price and shoot them millions of ducks that are hanging around for entire season! Dont get me wrong I'm not a farmer, dont know if they manufacture enough Tagament a year for me to do that for a living. I'll take my chances gettin shot at every know and then. I do know however, that Gadwall2 hit it on the head when he said a few sorry ins. farmers spoil it for the majority which are hard working people trying to make a honest living in a market that is tough right now. Based on your comments previously your probably still alittle upset about Waco and Ruby Ridge.

We have all 'fessed up as being farmers, albeit perceived by some to be a lowly profession. So, what exactly are your business(es) interest, Hammer? You have already established the fact that you and your family can be self-sustaining, by living off the land, and avoid purchasing any farmed crops. But what contributions are you and your business(es) making, in improving the quality of life for mankind?

Hammer,
You the man,
Don't have much time, I've got to go chase those snow geese.

I was able to get out of your post that you wanted to lease your 40 ac out to hunt on for $4800. You said you could make $100, so I figured you would lease it out for $120 ac to hunt. After losing $20 ac on beans you will make your $100

You still got any of that garden grow corn on the cob? It sure sounds good

To say that you can live off the land if you had to is lame return. So what if you can! What about everyone else that does not live in rural areas. I guess they would have to come buy some veggies that you are selling out of the back of the truck on the side of the road. Sorry cuz...that aint a new business innovation you hittin on. By the way plant me a big ole watermelon.
Now if you really think you can live off the land for one year, go at it big boy. But, you don't have to because the grocery store is convenient. It may be convenient to you, but necessary for others.
I bet your buddy in Alaska has to buy plenty of provisions from a grocery store at least a couple times a year.

Keep posting, maybe the Sierra club or another one of those "special interest"(HA!) groups will give you a job if they read this thread.

Hammer, why don't you place your bet. 10% is no where even close to the amount of irrigated soybeans in the delta. Farmers are a lot more advantageous to the environment than you give us credit for. Remember, we make our living off the land. Farmers help the environment like hunters are the best conservationist. I am not saying farmers don't make money but we couldn't survive without subsidies. Your wondrful EWG only shows what it wants people like you to see.

Oh yea, even though your arrogant @ss thinks your sh&t don't stink, I promise you it does.

boy that was alot to read !
sorry i havent been involved in this conversation but you guys seem to opinionate both sides very well

this happens to be one of my favorite subjects

ill chime in later with my views

i do believe in simple economics so if DU keeps buying corn to feed ducks
we have a new demand on the same supply driving corn prices higher right?
so at least the corn farmers should support DU!!!lol

keep it going, enjoying the reading

You fella's place a lot of self-importance on your own particular vocations. It takes a lot of people to make the world. We need the truck drivers, farmers, businessmen, autoworkers, steelworkers, migrant workers, etc.to get things done. No man is an island. Developing the delta is the worst idea I ever heard. Don't pour concrete over your food and clothes. The present development (the gambling boats)has provided many people with a way out of welfare and a boom to construction , I would step back and take a hard look at it before it gets out of hand.[/b]

I hate to be the one to lay this on ya, but I am the first generation of my family on both sides that is NOT a farmer. I have put in plenty of tractor and cultivator time, believe me. And we did not have "hands" to do the grunt work. I got no beef with subsidies if they are done right, but I still say that a lot of landforming work in the delta is priced ridiculously high compared to other parts of the state. And the funny thing is, no one has argued with me......

lease prices are totally out of control - supply and demand. There are always hunters that will pay exoribtant money to kill a duck and I have been one of them. I for one, am through wasting my money on leases. Anybody else?
