I always heard it's best to rip it off. Apparently if you squeeze the head to pull it off you help it release more venom. Could be wrong, makes sense though.

never been bit (knocking on wood very hard), but have had my fair share of close encounters. This past bowseason I sent a slick trick through a cottonmouth's head that refused to get out of my trail walking into my stand. I have 4 rattlesnakes b/w 4 feet and 6 ft 9 inches on the wall (well, one is a guitar strap) that i've had close encounters with. The amazing thing about the rattlers is how calm they generally are, very very even tempered (at least in my experience), and my place in franklin county is full of them. Worst experience would either be the canebrake I sat next too 2 turkey seasons ago, started rattling as a bird was working in, i never saw him until 5 minutes after I set up.... or this past year, checking cameras, biggest cottonmouth i've ever seen was in the road in front of us and not happy when we rode up on him, my buddy freaked and stopped right on top of him and he came in the ranger with us, we let him have it until I could get him out and dispatched.

all that being said, the worst pain i've ever felt was from an Asp ("BEARDED CLAM" Caterpillar) sting last year, lil furry guy got on the backrest of the ranger and i stretched my arm out right on top of him, whole arm went numb/useless/paralyzed for about 6 hours, scared the shiite out of me.

Maybe THAT'S why I've never been bit. I always thought that it was because I never sneaked around the woods in the spring and summer. Always wanted to give those no-shoulders ample time to leave.

I found the best snake weapon... IMHO..... is a 3" 410 pistol. I have one in a TC Contender with a 10" barrel with the screw in choke. One day, I will buy me one of those Tarus Judge pistols in SS 3" 410 revolver.

I came up on a cottonmouth this spring.... it crawled up in a small brush pile about 3' in diameter when he saw me.... I jumped off my rhino.... could only see a shaking tail in the brush pile..... I backed off about 10' and fired into the pile.... it blew snake out the back side of the pile and part of him was hanging on a stick about 3' on the other side of the pile. I don't know where the rest of him was.

The 410 pistol will make everyone a good shot. I love it.

My dad caught a beautiful 6' dimondback at work one day that a friend offered to make a belt out of for him. Told him to take it home and put in the freezer to kill it so it wouldn't mess up any of the hide. Only problem with that was there was no way momma was letting that snake in the house. Dad thought he was gonna be slick and get it in and out of the feezer without momma ever knowing. WRONG! Closest I ever saw a man come to dieing because of a snake was when momma opened that freezer to get a pack of butter beans out for supper
