Let me ask a question because I"ll admit that I am not the best when it comes to the nit picking rules. Say me and 2 of my friends are hunting with me in my boat....we've got several birds each...I know we arent supposed to have them in a pile, so are we legit to each have our ducks seperated into smaller personal piles right next to each or does each pile need to have a tag during the hunt? Or do we need to tag them after the hunt?

It kinda seems to me if your hunting (or "in the field") and your ducks are seperated into smaller personal piles right next to each hunter that would be appropriate. The way I read it, they must be seperated until the hunt is over then they must be tagged to be trasported or left at taxidermy etc.

actually according to the law, ducks being transported by the possessor dont need to be tagged....only when stored, left at taxidermist, etc

If you leave them somewhere other than your home, or at the home of someone you are giving them to, they must be tagged. See 50cfr20.

So don't leave them in your truck, at the camp, in the blind or give all the limits to your bud after the hunt unless you tag them.

Keep them separate in the field, not one on strap, not one guy with them all on his atv, etc.

A simple rule to follow and not hard either. 50CFR20 is there for everyone to read. A Highway Patrolman told me a long time ago that ignorance of the law is no excuse. Good advice to live by.

On DDM's question. If you hunt in a boat, keep your birds separate and pull your boat out at the end of the hunt with your truck, at what point do they need to be tagged? Can you take your jacket off and drain the boat or does the smell of Sharpie need to be present when the boat pulls up? Wingman said you can't leave them in your blind....if your blind is a boat then that's where they are left until you get to the ramp. Albeit they may be in separate piles, do they need to be tagged prior to hitting the ramp or is it ok since the possessors are present? What happens when one possessor gets out of the boat to get the truck only leaving one guy in the boat with two limits? Once you get in the truck, if it's two guys and two separate legal piles of birds in the bed do they need to be tagged? Is the problem that the guys in the initial post put the birds in the truck and then left?

this is one of those laws where the GW needs to have discretion, which sounds like is what went wrong with the OP's situation

depends if the game warden checking got laid the night before and/or that morning.

The laws are made clear a the rez water so the warden can "interpret" the "situation" as he feels, some of the nicest people out there can be gw's and on the other hand we all have been d!cked by the long schlong of the law befor too.

Think back to any law related classes and every teacher taught that laws were not made in absolute clarity for that reason. I do not hate or bash law enforcement they are mostly over worked and under paid, but the ones that are out to get you instead of up hold laws really chap my hide

Guys "working the dog" be careful, I have to quit letting them pile up as the dog brings them in when multiples are down and distributing them to "the dude who shot it" later on after the dog is done.

Just put the dog in another blind, i dont thimk it will do any good to try to write up the dog for over the limit...problem solved , your welcome

I believe, if I understand right you must have the limits seperated and both hunters must be present. If you are on one ATV and your padner is on another you should both have YOUR limit on YOUR atv. We got checked in Ark a couple years ago and had it explained that way. If you are transporting in an automobile you will have to at least leave a wing on the breast if you clean them for identifying.
