Are you guys seeing many jakes this year? I've hunted primarily inside the levee so im assuming since i haven't seen one single jake, last year's flood must of put a hurt on the hatch. Haven't hunted in the hills yet.. Just wondering what you think the hatch was like, based on the number of jakes you have seen so far. what about some of you other "river" hunters.. seen many jakes?

3/26 Thursday AM:
(2nd time i had been since 3/21) Called up a turkey for my roommate who has never killed a turkey. He came about 275 yards in less than 5 minutes ON PUBLIC LAND!!! And when he got to the 40 yard line my roommate moved BIG time and spooked him.

3/31 Tuesday AM:
Went with one of my professors to his place. Setup where he thought a turkey was roosted.... He wasnt... Heard another turkey and went to him. Long story short he had flown down and i was calling to him while we were moving and he answered every sound i made. As we were sitting down he got up and flew to me! (I SWEAR! Got up off the ground and flew over there!) He lit less than 10 feet from my professor and he killed him on the third shot! Better pattern at 30 steps than 3! HAHA!

4/4 Saturday AM:
Went with my old high school killin buddy. Called a turkey to about 90 yards and 4 gobblin, struttin, superjakes came up there and stayed for about 20 minutes and he !!!WOULD NOT!!! come up there with those jakes there. He came to where he could see them but that was it. I wanted to run them off and if i could have he would have come on up there but he was lookin at them and if i woulda spooked them then i woulda spooked him! And then, of course, they proceeded to beat his brakes off about 30 minutes later as we were trying to get on the opposite side of the gobbler from the jakes and the next time we heard him he was about a half a mile out in the middle of a cutover!

That last one dont count cuz he wasnt anywhere close to shotgun range, it is just the freshest story on my mind. Ha! BUT the other two do and that puts me up to 17 to the gun on the season.

Ok i have only been twice this week- i think my professors are trying to induce suicide or something but ANYWAY..

Thursday morning: The professor that i called the turkey up for the week before called me Wednesday evenin and wanted me to come call one up for his son who has only ever killed 1 turkey. So i agreed, i have never met his son, he's married and doesnt live around here but long story short, it took him forever to come 130 yards but when he got to 30 steps and he FINALLY saw the turkey- WHAT DO YA KNOW!- he moved! And i dont have to tell you what the turkey did.. But hey- i did my part!

Saturday morning: My cousin wanted to go, he's havin a rough one because he picked on me for missin them 2! I told him not to cuz he wouldnt kill the first turkey if he did and i'll be dang if he hadnt missed all 4 of the turkeys he's shot at!! HAHA! But anyway we went and heard a turkey in a place where i had killed a turkey and called up another and let him walk off because he wouldnt come no closer than 35 steps! So i knew there were some more turkeys in that area so we went and again- long story short- it was 4 longbeards together and i called once as we were sitting down and they were 150 yards and again about 2 minutes later and they were 50 yards and when i saw them come in sight they were trying to outrun one another!! Ha! And yes- he ended his missing streak at 20 steps.!

SO...... With the one thursday morning and the 4 saturday morning that brings my season total to: 22 to the gun on the season.! Shattering my previous single season record.!
