Well from what i can tell there is no shortage of cottonmouths in that area.

I would say that there is a shortage now.

I surely have shot snakes just for the heck of it, but I grew out of that about the time I graduated high school. I have no problem whatsoever with letting a cottonmouth slide right on by me. Now if you are not sure of your manhood, I could see where it would be difficult for you to do this.
Good post Wingman!

The general ignorance and stupidity of some of these snake posts would be funny if they weren't so sad.

As an officer of the law, what are your feeling on the killing a cottonmouth, rattlesnake or copperhead. :? I understand there is a place for all creature but if 350 snakes can be killed in one weekend, there ought to be at least a 60 day, 6 cottonmouth limit on them sumbitches.

my whole outlook changed when i sat down on a rotten log 3 years ago 3 feet from copperhead that wanted to eat me whole.....4 broadheads later, he gave his life to me....3 years ago this month i was asleep waiting on gobblers in Jeff Davis county and a 4 foot long timber rattler scooted across 6 inches from the tips of my boots.....i took home snake skin that afternoon....

after coming waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy too close to those mean SOBs twice in my life.... i say kill em all....ill deal with rats, moles, gophers or whatever and be fine with it.....let a non poisonous go....kill all the rest....
DEAD.....great pics....just wish i could have been there to get a few dozen too....

Don Miller,

You know good and well if MDWFP thought there were enough cottonmouths to have a season on, they would make you buy a cottonmouth stamp and put a slot limit on them.

I just don't see why someone would want to kill 300 snakes for no reason but to brag about it and take a picture. Poisonous or non-poisonous, we all know they were not being attacked nor were they in danger. If you are in danger long enough to kill 300 snakes, I think you had plenty of time to escape the situation.

Still, the snake is a hated creature and has been since the beginning of man.

And you can tell guy in the picture that if the Lafayette county officers pursue this, he can be charged with violating Public Notice M2-3201 Non Game Species in Need of Management.

M2-3201 says:

Possession of non-game wildlife from Mississippi populations for personal use.
(1) No person shall possess more than a total of 20 non-game reptiles......of the 20 non-game reptiles that may be possessed, no more than four (4) can be of the same species or subspecies.

If there are 85 cottonmouths in that picture...looks to me like he is facing 81 counts of over limit of non-game reptiles. At about $150 bucks per count, it might be a record....a $12,150 record.

I agree with wingman. This was incrediblly stupid. I used to kill snakes all the time. I even started collecting all the rattles I killed off of rattlesnakes wanting to make a display. After going through forestry/wildlife school my views changed dramatically and I about wont kill a snake anymore. I have walked over a many of poisonous snakes marking and cruising timber and have never been bit. When I see one I just walk around it.

i reckon both of ya got a good point..........now i will be honest about it though.........
would i have killed all them snakes if i had the time and the shells............prolly yes
would i have felt bad for it........prolly not, once again the only good snake is a dead snake....
would i have posted it for everyone to see it.........well prolly so before knowing that it was goin to be a 13,000 dollar post........but after knowing that........no, i would have kept it to myself..........i hate snakes but they aint work a good used truck or a land to kill a duck...........
If it wasn't for bad luck then i would have no luck at all........

O.K., O.K. I will have to say it...

PRICELESS

Some people just have WAY too much time on their hands! Just think if these people put that much time and effort into doing something WORTHWHILE! They could have worked on spring foodplots, hung new stands, or heck adopted a highway for liter control! I liked the comments about the snakes eating the quail eggs (which I know they do)- hawks also eat turkey eggs, rabbits, quail eggs- lets just have a big msducks hawk shoot! just kidding before some of these guys start a new post about who is in on that one!
