Starting tonight, State will have to go 9-1 in its final 10 games against LSU, OM and UT to even have a chance at Hoover, much less a regional.

The party's been over since the loss to UAPB.
Re: MS Baseball 2015
So many people wanted Coach Polk gone and to hire Cohen. Well in 7 seasons at State Coach Cohen will have done 3 times what Coach Polk only did 1 time in 29 years.
Have a losing record!!!!

Re: MS Baseball 2015
again, as in other thread, I don't have a personal dog in the fight (pun absolutely intended)...but Cohen has a MUCH MUCH more difficult job than Polk had for much of those 29 years. He is coaching in a far more competitive landscape...Now, is 3 losing season out of 7 with a CWS championship series berth thrown in there acceptable? don't know and I'm not comparing the two coaches just questioning your stat comparison in this context it's not fair in my opinion.NUTMEG wrote:So many people wanted Coach Polk gone and to hire Cohen. Re: MS Baseball 2015
Just when you think we're gonna catch a break, our unlucky streak continues. It's almost laughable at this point... The amount of chances we had was unbelievable. We just still can't get that big hit and had some terribly unlucky breaks. We threw everything but the kitchen sink last night and still couldn't do it. I've come to the conclusion we're cursed.
Huge hats off to Zac Houston and Trevor Fitts for coming in and pitching lights out. Fitts just ran out of gas but that game should have been over way before the 14th.

GH....please quit posting......everyone on this forum is dumber for reading the things you post. May God have mercy on your soulGreenhead22 wrote:The team that is on the field right now was the #2 ranked recruiting class in the nation that year. Let that sink in. Cohen isn't having an issue recruiting over scholarship limits. I never hear him complain about the limits. The scholarship argument is a mute point. It's obviously not about scholarships when you've got kids taking a "25%" over full ride offers. I just looked at the commitments/signees for the past 3 yrs and for next season. These kids are turning down schools that offer full scholarships to come to State for partials. It's not about the money. It's all about where they want to go. I never once had a baseball player walk into the office I worked at and ask about student loans for the 3 years I was there. They didn't have to. They were all on baseball and academic scholarships.
We can argue about this til we're black and blue in the face. Scholarships are not the reason we're getting our asses handed to us, week in and week out. These kids we recruit are either overrated or majorly underachieving. I've attended games at Dudy Noble for 28 years. I've seen the hey days of the 90's and early 2000's. That 89-90 squad is the best team I've ever seen take the field at Dudy Noble. I haven't seen it this bad in a long time. And I'm not saying it's because of Cohen, Butch and Mingione either. I haven't figured out whether or not we're bringing in kids that we're "projecting" to increase their skills or something else. If they aren't hitting .400 in high school, they won't hit in college. If he's hitting .315, he'll be a .275 college hitter at best ....... and that's what looks like we're doing.

Re: MS Baseball 2015
“This club was not the club we wanted it to be,” MSU head coach John Cohen said. “We need to bring some great competitors into our program.”
Cohen in his postgame threw his kids under the bus. No wonder why they quit giving a damn for him. Shows you his class and the lack of coaching ability.
When you start micromanaging your team and putting everyone under a microscope, this is what happens. He took the fun out of the game for them. Cohen's already had one visit to Dr. Keenum's office over his conduct on the field this season. Sure may be another one coming. The kids have been talking too, and the words being spoken are not good. If you aren't pulling anything close to a 20-10 record in the SEC year in and year out, then you aren't there competitively. You can't put the blame on the kids when you're the one that brought them in. That's just a lack of coaching.

Nope, Cohen was still the better hire. Ron wanted Raffo to have it only because he'd still be in the background, pulling all of the strings. He knew with Cohen coming in, he would lose all control over the program.NUTMEG wrote:Yall might should have listened to Coach Polk!!
Raffo can't even win at Ark St. It would be worse at State.
Re: MS Baseball 2015
I think Cohen/Thompson just got too comfortable in the fact that BBCOR bats and tall seams on balls would allow you to throw to contact and play great defense to win very low scoring baseball games with a run here or there. That mentality is certainly what they have recruited for, won some with in the past, and crashed and burned with this season. I agree the micromanagement of every situation in the game is a negative. Got to let the boys play. I will always believe when we were not playing great ball mid-season of the year we went to CWS final that it was the boys who said lets play this game the way WE know how to play it. Cohen can still be the right guy, but he has to humble himself and learn from mistakes. A couple or three guys that can hit .250 but also drive it out of the park on any swing is needed badly. 2 over powering type of starting pitchers has got to be in your rotation if you are to win many SEC series or post season brackets. There are a lot of pitchers in the SEC that do very well with a fastball, hard slider, changeup arsenal of pitches. You also have to have those one or two "IT" guys. We leave so many runners stranded or either do not get something going till there are 2 outs.....diversity and chemistry on a team is good. It allows that "IT" factor to develop among the team and players. MSU is very talented. There is no doubt most if not all of these boys could have found spots on any SEC team out there. But the observation Big made about too many of the same type players does hold some water.
Are we gonna get wet?

The way I feel about it, is what do you expect if you win you get paid for it and if you lose then you get fired. In relation to the other coaches in the nation or SEC where does his salary rank? Where does State's facilities rank among the SEC and nation? Then the most important where does the State's fan base rank and expect out of there program. To me getting to a title game or Omaha is not a hall pass but that is where we should be on a regular bases, maybe I'm wrong. I do not think that the players or coaches stop trying and wanted to lose but it just did not work. For the first time in my life this weekend at our hunting club the game was on and we turned it off and went outside to work. Someone had it on the radio and someone went over to the vehicle and turned it off and I'm sure we are not the only ones doing it.
Re: MS Baseball 2015
I'm not promoting Coach Raffo, he might not been able to do anything at Miss State. Although, considering Polk's accomplishments and success maybe his involvement wouldn't been so bad...just responding to you in context, arguably, Arkansas State has a bigger win this season than Miss State does with series win over Louisville. Their final records are comparable and it's no question it's harder to win at Ark State than an SEC program, considering at Ark State your non-conference is a whipping post and at Miss State your non-conference is a resume booster; completely aside from talent and recruiting. I thinks it's a terrible comparison on your part. The success of a coach at Ark St compared to what he might do at Miss State is anything but transitive.Greenhead22 wrote:Nope, Cohen was still the better hire.
