I hunted on Catahoula Lake from age 14 to 19. I had killed 6 banded ducks by the age of 19. On one particular hunt I killed a banded mallard drake and my buddy killed another three ducks later. They were both the same age and banded the same area in Canada. One of my bands was a wood duck that was banded in North Carolina!

hawkeye you don't understand I guide. Every banded duck only has one leg when it comes in the blind.

I'd have to dig-up my records, but we had a dry spell......like 187 birds between bands.......then killed five banded birds in a 2-week span out of 60 mallards. That's one in 12.........but I would think that's very RARE!

I think ours runs closer to 1 : 200.

So those legs just mysteriously disappear off the ducks, huh. hehe

I killed a couple of those mysterious "one legged ducks" in Arkansas in the early 1990's....... Amazing how they lost a leg between death and making it down to my end of the blind.

Didn't know steel shot was so effective and powerful, did you. hehe

MSB, I looked at that site and noticed that canada geese had a much higher rate of recovery. I noticed that to be true when I lived up north too. I think that so many of the resident birds get banded and shot around the area it is much more likely that you can get a band up north. Bryan
P.S. been duck hunting for 19 seasons and have found that it could be a one in a million or a one in ten chance of getting a band, just depends on if you are lucky that day.

Since 1995 my party has killed 3028, 18 ducks were banded. One was a weigon, 17mallards (two hens, 15 G-heads). Mine has been about 100 mallards per band, 29yrs old= 14bands

Well call it lucky if you will, AND BELIEVE ME I KNOW YOU WILL , but I have a duck hole, where there has been at least 8 banded ducks killed out of it. Yes there has been alot of ducks killed out of it but * have been banded. These have been 3 wood duck bands and 5 mallard bands. I believe ducks migrate together after they are banded because all woodie bands killed at one time and 2 mallards killed another time, other 3 mallard bands were single but....... still from the same hole??? That's my opinion. Just in the right place at the right time, but if 4 people are there "THEY ALL SHOT THE BANDED DUCK" if you know what I mean.

Location..Location..Location...ie Maryland/Virginia...Up on the Eastern Shore, and farther North on the Upper Chesapeake Bay Banding projects are more common with private duck clubs....Thus, more bands are aquired in this region...Once banded in the Upper Chesapeake (MD)..the ducks don't have that far to fly before they get waxed!!!!!

Most give NO certificates..just a band..some have addresses some don't..

A lot of the local duck hunters in that region don't even wear these bands..bcuz they are so abundant....I DO though!!

OK...changing the odds again from the first post in this thread. I shot #4 for the season yesterday AM. All four are Greenheads. I need to buy a lottery ticket!

Softcall, you are killing me. I came away from this past weekend's hunt saying "what's a greenhead"? Of course, a strap full of gadwalls is no bad substitute! I guess that you have officially swapped the Mississippi Flyway for the Central - how 'bout sharing the wealth? I could always trade you a deer hunt...
