I put 300 bucks into PERS everymonth, if it starts to effect our living I will just lower my PERS. Problem comes when they decide they are going to do it again. This year fine, next year its going to be someone elses turn to take the cut.

Sorry but you can't lower what u put into PERS. As a matter of fact you will putting 1.75% more in starting July 1 whether you want to or not. If you are putting some in deferred comp then you can lower that amount.

(especially in areas other than metro and the delta) Do I think they should be paid more?? Heck yeah. I am not for cutting their salaries, but compared to other state jobs, it looks pretty good.

My wife has been in it for 8 years and has a Master and is not making 40k. So either the ones telling you they are making 40k are exagerating or getting extra pay for being in some of the worst areas of the State. Oh and it is a forced retirement.. Personally I would rather have the money they take out for the retierment and let me invest it on my own. I am pretty sure I could get a higher return than the state PERS program will give my wife..

Well I certainly have no way to validate what I was told, but considering we (Coahoma County) BEG the "teach for america" people to come in and teach, it is probably some combat pay added. I can think of no other reason that many of them would come here when they could go some where else and still get there loans paid for. Coahoma county I truly believe would have to lead the pack in poor performance.
There will be a day....

I've said it before and I'll say it again: We have many great teachers. We have many caring principals. And then we have many parents who don't prepare their children to be successful in school.

You can have as many government programs as you want, but until students show up with at least a modicum of discipline, education won't improve. Teachers simply can't handle unruly students and cover material at the same time. My solution is simple, instead of charter school, counseling, and other complicated programs, states should bring back a couple of military boarding schools for grades 7-12.

Per an article on my home page, education degrees are some of the worst paying degrees one can get.
