okay here is how to do it. take your 5 gallon bucket and turn it upside down. drill a 2 to 3 inch hole in it. turn back over. place a coffe filter with a slit cut in it over the hole. put the tomato through the bottom of the bucket and the slit in the filter. hold it while you add enough soil for it to hold its self. make sure you bury it as deep as possible. then fill the bucket up about 3 inches from the top. i initially put enogh water in for it to run out. then i add a stadium cup of water to the bucket every other day. hang where it gets plenty of sunlight.
last year i did about 4 buckets. a couple with 2 plants int the bottom. any more questions just ask.

I have all of the following started in peet moss pots, just waiting on the ground to dry up so I can bring in a load of pro mix and get a tiller going.
Onions (sweet yellow)
Green Onions
Brocolli
Okra
Tomatoes
Squash
Peppers (bell and jalapeno)
I am holding off til I break ground with watermellon, cantalope and waiting til July to plant some pumpkins. I am going a bit overboard for someone who hasn't done a garden in years. Hope it doesn't get out of hand. Anybody done any real planting yet?

Ok.
As of today I have planted (today and yesterday) tomatoes, mesclun, arugula, lettuce, watermelon, onion, garlic, hot banana pepper, red yellow and green bell peppers, sweet corn, okra, squash, zucchini, english peas and butter beans.
After this rain I will plant green beans, cantaloupe, black eye, and crowder peas.
We'll see what all comes of it...

Iron Grip, you are my hero! I thought I was being ambitious...........

I hope you have a great garden when all is said, keep us posted! Are you gonna put anything in between the rows to cut down on weed/grass growth? I might go with Jeff's recomendation and use grass clippings (certainly have plenty of those) but might use mulch too. Gonna try to do all I can to plan for success!

corn's up! even though it's a little stunted from the cool weather. 34-0-0 will help that when it warms up

I know the cultivator is hooked and ready. It was too wet this weekend. hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Try newspaper with mulch on top. The newspaper will smuther the weeds. I use it in my flower beds because I hate pulling weeds.

I am going to get 2 tons of pro mix tomorrow. Should I go ahead and spread it over the area that is going to be the garden and then til it when it dries up enough (hopefully this weekend), or should I til the ground then spread the pro mix, then til again?

Could you please elaborate on this process? What's a suckle?

Wildfowler, I think he's talking about the little leaves that develop at the bottom of the plant. They don't produce, but just "suckle" the water, depriving the 'mater growin tops.
Redeye with regards to the pro mix I don't know whether its makes a difference when you mix, I've never put that much in at once. All I've done is dig a hole with a p.h.d bout a foot deep and then fill it with pro mix. This is for tomatoes and peppers, it may benefit your peas and beans to spread it throughout the garden site.

MSDawg, I should explain that I don't know what in the heck I am doing. I also live in a neighboorhood where they remove all the topsoil when building the houses, so I am trying to compensate for that. Don't figure I'll have to bring in the pro mix, or at least not as much in the years to follow. Sure hope it works out!

Not a bad idea to do that then since you're starting from scratch.
