got one this morning heard no turkeys and walked into a big hay field and saw what i thought was a turkey almost 1000 yards out started calling and noticed he had hens with him. So i started a fighting sequence and 3 other birds answered so we moved and called them within 75 yards but 5 deer spooked them out. We were just about to call it quits and i made one more yelp and the bird we set up on at first answered in the field so we took out. Walked up to the edge of the woods and saw him about 150 yards. Set up and he came runnin in through some sage grass. When he stepped out of the sage he kept walkin to the right i stopped him in the only lane i had left to shoot and pulled the trigger and he dropped. I stepped it off and he was at 63 yards!! Ive never killed one anywhere close to being that far. Had a 9 in beard but most of it had fallen out. He also had another beard that was broken off right at the base. He had 1 1/2 in spurs. I just figure he was an old bird that did his fair share of breeding.

must of had a great set up for the gobbler to be in front of the hen, leaving her for that matter.. that dont happen often. Monday was a great day to be in the woods.. Hell any day in the woods is better than being at work.

Got one yesterday mornin at 7 35 am. Never heard him gobble in the tree, first time he gobbled he was already on the ground by himself. He came in like he was on a rope. Gobbled 4 more times and once right in front of me about 35 yards. He had a 10 and half inch beard and weighed 21 lbs. No spurs at all!?

I don't know if i envy you, or think you messed up. You got your 3 birds in the first week and your done for the year. That's awesome and it sucks at the same time.

The unhappiest turkey season I ever had was when I limited out the first week. It was torture sitting out all those pretty April mornings when I didn't have anyone to tag along with. Now that my children are old enough to hunt, I often let them be the shooter while I watch and coach a little. It's the same or better rush to let the kids shoot the gobbler as doing it yourself. But every now and then, they let me pull the trigger on one!

anyone have a logical explaination on why you find longbeards with no spurs... killed one in arkansas a few years ago like that.. genetics is what i thought but are there some environmental factors that could cause it?

Oh yea i got plenty of those "friends" that start callin and wantin to hang out usually around the first of March and after May 2 i wont hear from them again until about the same time next year.! Ha!

I have been twice since my last post. Thursday mornin- me and my roommate went on public land. Didnt hear a turkey until 8:00, he came about 300 yds and he got to 40 steps and my roommate moved and spooked him. He's never killed a turkey and dont know much about it but he's learning! Saturday mornin went and heard 2 or 3 turkeys gobble 2 or 3 times in the tree, but couldnt get to them- water EVERYWHERE!
