I am not sure what all the causes are for the decline in duck numbers over the years (but I have several opinions ), but the numbers are not close to what they were even 10 years ago--especially not what they were several decades ago. I have hunted the same spot south of Tunica for 30 years (wow, has it really been that long?) that my Dad started hunting about 67 years ago (when he was about 8 years old). Throughout much of my life, we have had many talks about how the duck numbers, habits, and flight patterns have changed dramatically. There is no longer the initial "morning flight" that was almost like clockwork from about 45 minutes to an hour before sunrise until about 7:30 AM or so for most of my life. The much fewer ducks around no longer roost in the buckbrush and don't come trickling in pairs, singles, and small groups late in the season like they used to. How I used to enjoy slipping into the brake about an hour before sunrise and getting quietly set while hundreds of ducks started waking and milling around all around us. Man, when they decided to fly, it was time to get it on!

It will be very interesting to see what happens to the duck populations in the coming years. I am concerned because I don't think my children will ever see even a few of the type hunts that were fairly common for many years.

I think the biggest factor is changes in agricultural practices, they still kill the hell out of them in south la and still killing um pretty good in certain parts of the delta places. I heard fighting bayou killed more ducks this year than they ever have, and thats over a 20 or so year span.

Almost reported it as offensive, too. I like that little thing at the bottom right of each post that you can click on. ENOUGH OFF TOPIC POSTS. This is gonna come in real handy. Also, does it increase your post count, Micah ?

One thing I did notice that was not posted is the weather. Even if we had food, what pushes ducks south?

I have seen ice no more than 5 days this year! seriously why would they fly down? They have food, shelter, and sunny days. There seems to be no real need to fly to just because.

Good reads and exactly why I am so skeptical of COE projects and generally lean against them until the merits are proven.

Just a thought, and not to pick on Doc & Nash, as he merely reflects the common mindset by many on this board. It seems illogical to me to be against new people entering the sport --- "newbies" --- and to still expect many folks to even care about destruction of duck habitat. After all, we were all "newbies" at one time ---someone introduced us to the sport, or we just jumped in ourselves and learned. Aren't your young kids "newbies" ? --- are you against them being a member of our fraternity? And wouldn't we have more strength with numbers? ---numbers that have been dwindling every year according to the statistics ---just check the license sales numbers with the MDWF&P. Just some food for thought.

I guess this confirms the fact my stock in Swan Lake Hunting Club never will be worth anything again

I got this in an email from ole lipsplitter. I printed it off an took to my uncle who's in a rest home now. He almost cried. He was one of the old timers who spent most of his life under those ideal conditions.
