GC, my guess is you were responding to my post, and if I offended you, I am man enough to appologize. It was not my intention to come across as condesending at all. We tend to spend money on things we love - our passions. But for someone wanting to get into a sport, the costs involved in duck hunting can be staggering. The original post was about the best call for the money... I guess that all depends on your viewpoint about what 'best' means.
Sometimes you just have to close your eyes, count to ten, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you wouldn't look good in prison stripes... and just smile at that dumbass and walk away.

Hey MSB: No harm, No foul.

It is just my nature get riled up when I percieve any combo of of stuff like "He is a phoney rich boy, he shoots a 3.5" SBE and not an 870" or "He shoots an 870, must be a poor low class slob hunter" yada, yada, yada. It is not nearly as bad on this board as it used to be.

I probably over reacted, too. Mia culpa.

Have a beer on me.

Peace out.
GC

P.S. Best call "for the money" is a Haydells D-22 or Echo Poly single reed.

Gulfcoast took the words out of my mouth. Buy whatever you like and whatever suits you whether it's $120 or $10. As far as cheap calls sounding good, ditto. Those are my picks as well.

Gulfcoast, you ever blown an ECHO timber magic? Blew one this weekend and loved it! I knew that you liked that open water one you had.

BTW, 'GC'.....how do you like your 'Blackwood'?

Man, ya'll oughta know better than to answer a post that begins, "What's the best blah, blah, blah?"....'turns into a 'piss-fest' every time, don't it?. ........and how long you been posting here? :?

Readin' all this stuff didn't change my mind one bit, about the call I use, either......'don't really know if it's the 'best', 'cause I haven't tried'em ALL!

Simply put......the 'best' call for the money is one that
  • happens to work 'best' (at the time) for the fool that's blowin' it, regardless of WHAT it costs
  • gives you the most confidence in your ability to make what your calling TO, come TO it, and
  • is NOT endorsed by GH22   (although HE really sounds good with his latest call).

Now, lemme conduct a lil' esperiment, here......'see if ya'll learned anything......

..........what's the best 'spinner' for the money, everybody? (BWAAAHAHAhahaha)

The two best calls I have that sells for less than $50 bucks are:
Roten Vortex & Primos Madam. The Vortex is now available in both single and double reed for $25. Primos is dropping the Madam so they should be on sale to close-out existing stock. Coming out with a call with the same reed, bigger barrel and guess what.......it will cost more.

Hey Anat:

Took forever to find a winch with an Imron powder coat finish that matched the paint on the Blackwood, especially to find a remote controlled winch that does not draw too much power off the moonroof or clash with the fuzzy dice! The high school girls absolutely DIG it, too!

Love,
GC

I can see GC's point, it's just too bad that it isn't true in the least half the time. I'd say it depends, but there is no doubt that many duck hunters in the field think that their equipment dictates the hunter, and their action in the field reflects this attitude. They spent all this money, so now they are entitled to behave as they wish, if that means squatting on you and flaring your ducks, that is what they do. I see young broke guys doing that sometimes but that is different, they just don't know better. Store bought duck hunters know better, however spending 10 thousand to do a 200 dollar job somehow entitles them to behave in the field as if they have something due them and are going to get it. I could do without that attitude and dare you to try and tell me that it isn't real. Generally, the more money they spend, the worse their behavior is. Something happens to good grown men when they suit up and go duckhunting, and a lot of the time it isn't very good for those of us around them. I bought all this equipment, and now I know what I am doing, and have a right to do it. (or something like that) Whatever it is, it isn't pretty many many times.
He who judges on this basis is almost always he who knows not very much about duck hunting. In reality GC, it certainly does matter, because it ends up in behavior in the field. Sad but true.

'GC', the 'fuzzy dice' is a nice touch......if I had a 'Blackwood', I'd HAVE to have a pair of fuzzy dice, too.......just to keep folks guessing.

I don't think you can buy 'Class'........I looked at Wal-Mart the other day, but couldn't find any.

The thing is, after I put a lift kit on the Blackwood, the curb feelers no longer can touch the curb. I am still working on this angle.....

Dang, GC...most folks would have lowered a Blackwood. You probably had to raise it to make room for those 22" rims though.

Come to think of it, I don't know how I ever killed any ducks when I was in high school. All I had to hunt in was Levis, an Army fatigue jacket, and a pair of rubber waders that were dang near covered up with hot patches. I toted all I owned in the two pockets of that old jacket that was worn out before my brother let me have it. I had one call, a Yentzen that still sits on my coffee table... there was no one around to teach me and all I knew how to do was what I now know to be a "lonesome hen." Must have been some truly stupid ducks I killed! I sure know I loved doin' it though. Let me see...I loved being out there and doing it; I killed some ducks; I couldn't call a lick; I didn't even own any camo or decoys ( I finally got 6 paper mache ones when I was in college); I didn't have a 4 wheel drive...Shoot, I don't reckon I even was a duck hunter?

crow, we must have been trained by the same folks. we hunted out of a 1969 toyota corolla that would sometimes make it through the mud holes, but only if we got a good running start. didn't matter. we could pick it up and move it. we normally shot as many squirrels as ducks, and had no idea that you were not supposed to get wet. and from a box of shells, we better kill 20 ducks. couldnt afford to shoot more than once...
