It had 2" masking tape on it when I got it. I had to take it off to go in for warranty service, and I tried masking tape, duct tape, and packing tape after that and never could get it to hold tight.
Sorry Goosebruce for hijacking your thread.

Did you try cleaning the PCM itself? Sounds like it got dirty and nothing would stick to it. For duct tape not to stick is really strange. Also, did you try say a longer piece of tape to get to a different area on the PCM?
I can't say that I've ran into that problem. I've heard of the shutting down issue if it does work itself loose and that's the purpose of the tape. Then again, my 7.3L shut down when the CPS (cam posistion sensor) went out, so nothing new to me.
I'll say this about head gaskets. The head gaskets are likely literally being blown out from the heads. Alot of people start putting alot of fuel and air into these engines and the gaskets can't handle it and they end up letting go. Also head studs are a issue with higher HP and TQ numbers.

The tape would stick, but I guess it had enough "stretch" to it to allow the chip to lose connection. Cleaning the PCM may have worked, but I didn't try that. It didn't happen but maybe 2-3 times a month, but still irritated me. Since I didn't buy the chip (it came in the truck) I didn't have much recourse with the Street and Performance folks in Little Rock who made it, and therefore I just went out and bought my own solution.
Matter of fact I still have the chip, and it works on the XLE8 version of PCM that was on the '99 (maybe others years?). I'll make someone a great deal on it. I think it added 50hp and 50ft/lbs torque - a real "sweet" program when it stayed connected.

I just got a dodge 2500 QC 4wd with the cummins and the 48re auto tranny about 6 weeks ago. This is the first deisel I've owned and I got it for about the same reasons you did. I want it to still have some usefull life left in it when I have it paid off. I don't "need" a deisel, I just wanted one. I figure that when I go to sell it I should be able to recoupe some of the expense of the deisel if not all of it. The only gripe, if you want to call it that, is that I got the auto tranny. This is the first vehicle that I have ever owned that I didn't have to shift my own gears in and the auto just doesn't have the same feel. It doesn't feel like it's locked up when you mash the gas like a manual, guess that's why they call them a slush box, hehe. I like the idea of the intake/exhaust and also a leveling kit, but what could I expect performence wise out of the cold air intake and a better flowing exhaust? Are there any mods that you can do to tighten up the tranny to make it more crisp?

Air kit and exhaust will simply make small performance increases, if any. Exhaust will give a good throatly sound to the truck. However, a 5.9L straight piped is a sweet sounding truck.
Being the truck is an '06, you may not find alot of stuff for it just yet. It appears that ATS makes a TC lockup box that will help you control the TC lockup. Far as actual shift kits (firmer shifting or short shifts), that may come later from the same companies. Also keep an eye out on Bully Dog (BD). They work alot with the 5.9L and it's only a matter of time before their BD-Power TOWLOC is available for the '06. It's available for up to the '05 model.
