'Timberjack'........what was it I said when those honkers rolled over the treeline that day........is that kinda-like calling the shot?.....or do 4-lettered expletives count?
'Gamehog' couldn't say anything on a greenhead that slipped in on top of me and my wife, one morning we went with him. I think he said something afterwards, though.......like....."why didn't ya'll shoot?" It was his 'spot', so I was waiting for him to call the shot in case he thought it might come back around......plus.........it was too late to say or do anything when we all realized it was a greenhead. That duck fell in there like a terrified Merganzer. Sometimes, you just don't have time to say anything........and if you have to sit there and discuss it......it's usually too late, by then.
We were hunting with another friend one morning........mallards pouring into his hole. It wasn't quite shooting time so we watched as several groups landed. Then it got to be legal shooting time and we proceeded to debate whether to just flush them without shooting, thinking they might trickle back in....in small groups.......or just go ahead and empty the guns. There weren't any predetermined shooting assignments, lanes....whatever.......and then another group came-in and just sat there, suspended over the others on the water at about 20 yds........and I'm still waiting for my host to make the first move. I'm here to tell ya.......a greenhead hovering 6 feet off the water at 20yds is pretty tough to pass-up.....so, he did the right thing......flattened the one hovering over the hole for an eternity, looking for a place to land.
See, he didn't have to say anything.
