cwink wrote:As a native Texan, I am familiar with "State Pride" I still see the Lone Star Flag and thinkof Texas as one of the great states of this nation. Having lived here in MS for almost 20 years now, I still don't look to the MS State Flag the same way.. While I am proud to be from the South, each time I see the flag, it is a small reminder of a time when the the belief that slavery was ok.. There are very few Americans or Mississippians that believe this now and to have that small reminder flying over a state institution does not make sense to me.. You want to fly it in your yard, or your house fine.. Feel free.. But I don't think it needs to fly over Govt buildings.

If it came up for a vote to change the flag, I would vote tovchange it.. As the father of a biracial adopted child, I would not want to look him in the eye and tell him that I voted to keep it.. While changing the flag will not stop those who want to cry "victim" It will send a signal that MS as a State is at least trying to move forward and better race relations..

When I moved to MS in 1996 I was a little shocked by the difference in race relations between TX and MS. My wife and had this discussion last night about if true racism still exist to a large degree. I told her that I think about 20% of the population is racist.. Meaning they hate someone just because the color of their skin. But there is another form of racism that I think is more prevalent and that is "stereotypical racism". I see it here on this board at times.. People referring to Black people as "non-swimmers", "democrats" etc. Everytime I see it I just sort of roll my eyes and shake my head.. I know it is meant more to be a description of a culture and class and not necessarily as hatred towards someone because of the color of their skin because I know some folks that use it that do have black friends, but I don't see how it helps in anyway.

Many are afraid to voice an opinion either way due to they are scared to lose jobs or have businesses affected. Walmart pulls all confederate merchandise etc. If you make it known as you have that you support the removal of the flag then be prepared for backlash of the new gun club you are assosiated with. There are many gun rights folks that see this as another step to take away rights from people and fear guns are the next step so would you welcome 1000 folks starting a FB page wanting people to boycott the new range based on your public view?? It's your view and you are entitled to it but as most businesses see it only takes a few demonstrating to take its toll on a business and the protesters usually win and get appeasement. Slowly but surely all Americans rights are being taken away. Won't be long and the constitution will be null and void. As someone stated this isn't just about a flag. If that kid hadn't killed anyone it wouldn't be discussed.

Just look at what was on Fox News and how all over there are confederate memorials being vandalized and now they are wanting them removed. Will these be hate crimes??? Or just another example of an outlet to vent frustration?? Starts with one item then another then another then another till there isn't anything left.

I Beleive your 20 percent figure is way off on both sides of the fence on the issue. The vote passed by 2-1 last vote. Those same people will vote again. People on both sides just get more angry thus the situations get worse for everyone. Now with vandalization of condfederate memorials etc it will not help anyone's cause to remove the flag. On the flip side the places that sell the confederate flag are making a killing right now for sure!!!!! Just like the gun dealers did when Obama tried to ban the AR.

If the flag isn't voted on and is removed then street names, lakes, towns etc with any ties to the south will be next in the snowball affect. It's already being pushed in other states. What will we rename Ross Barnett so folks will continue to fish there without offense?. Surely Ross Barnett should be seen as more offensive than a flag...right??? Why has this never been brought up?? His life story is way more offensive i would assume.

BTW AL SHARPTON is already in Brooklyn to protest the name change of a street named after a confederate general so get ready!!!! Change is a coming and I'm sure crime will stop now.

 Can't y'all see what is happening? It's so frustrating to me that so many are believing the hype. Next in no particular order will be: the American flag-it was flown by many millions more people who have committed bad deeds than the Rebel flag, guns-used by evil people to commit countless bad deeds, and finally Christianity-used by millions to justify terrible deeds. If you believe any single one of these politicians who are magically all of the sudden thinking that now is the perfect time to remove this flag are doing it for anything other than political reasons, you are naïve at best. It seems to me that a large majority of our population is now having their opinions influenced by the media and all of their agendas. Makes me sick. We have become a society of people who want our opinions dictated to us just like we want our lifestyle provided to us by our guvment.

I understand incrementalism, and the slippery slope that may come with it. I agree that at some point you can't give anymore and have to stand up and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.. In fact I just spend the last few days arguing till I blue in the face with some church members on facebook about gun rights, if they close the doors in my face next Sunday I wouldn't be surprised.. So I understand these issues.. The MS Flag is just not the red line in the sand for me..

The 20% to me includes people that hate just because of skin color.. And I think this includes both white racist and black racists. And this type of racism exists in every nation.. And I don't think just because you voted to keep the old MS flag last time that makes you a racist..

Well it's started here in TN as well.

Small highschool "The Rebels" will have a name change due to so many complaints. People having an all out war about how it hurts their feelings. Never was a issue until now.

In Camden, TN there is Nathan Bedford Forrest. Over 25 miles of hiking trails, cabins, etc. There is also a church camp that joins the state park. Well the name Nathan Bedford is offensive. I'll bet my salary these people (trying to refrain from cussing like a teenage sailor) have no idea where the park even is. It has never been an issue, but now I have something to do since I am an elected official, and this would be great on my resume. I saved the people from the state park.

They keeping pushing white this white that. Hate this hate that, and you will wake up one morning with an all out race war on your hands. PS living in MS made me despise sorry black people. I have never seen so many sorry black people in one place. Of course there weren't any in my town and only graduated with 6 in a public high school.

I have now seen mention of trying to get rid of the confederate carvings at Stone Mountain in GA. Boy are they taking the ball and running with it or what?

I think Bill O Reiley really hit the nail on the head with this talking points.. And I 100% agree with him on this issue.. He is making a stand!! and telling everyone that the US is not a racist nation and anyone is going to start calling out all the race baiters!!!

Like I said in an above post. What will we rename the Ross Barnett reservoir to not offend anyone?? I would love for waters world from fox to go below the spillway or in the main lake and pose the question about anyone being offended by the name Ross Barnett?? Will anyone stop fishing until the name changes? Bet very few if any asked would have a clue about his biography but I bet it comes up before all is said and done and it will be renamed. Ol SHARPTON is fixing to be a busy man and make a ton of money. I would love to see a poll here to see how many would vote for or against the flag change. People tend to say one thing in public but when that voter curtain closes they do just the opposite.

Being aggitated or offended is apparently the cool thing to do these days. If people would put that much effort into something construtive, like a job or work effort, I wonder how this world would be.

I'm for the flag, I'm for the constitution, I'm for god and country. Thank goodness there are people, and businesses that I can recommend/spend my money with that will stand up for MS.

I'm not going to address every element of this discussion, or spend any time highlighting the flawed, paranoia laden logic. Not that my opinion is any more important than those that differ, but here it is. Simply put, the Confederate battle flag is a reminder of an openly racist past here in MS to a large population and class of people in our state. It's that simple. My heritage and history will always be tantamount, but my desire to keep that symbol on our flag is not more important to me than the individual feelings of those it truly offends. There are a lot of good, hard working black people in our state and I think we as white people need to finally show some respect for their stance on this issue. I don't see anything other than a reminder of where I live - the football games, sweet tea, deer season - when I look at the flag. But when you have a candid, open conversation with a black person on this issue, I have yet to hear them tell me anything other than a negative connotation is associated with that symbol, for them.

I believe them. If you really want to know why the flag needs to be different, go talk to some black people and frame the issue from their side. All of the other arguments and analogies are apples and oranges. I'm willing to accept any consequences of changing the flag. If I have to fight harder to keep other issues from spiraling in the wrong direction, so be it. The black population of this state deserve a change.

The "trash" people keep referring to don't, for the most part, get out and vote. Both races. This isn't about them. It's about the good and decent people of this great state coming together to promote change for the better. Albeit, symbolic, it is still positive.

So let's say the flag is changed or removed. Are you for removing all confederate statues and memorials or changing all street names that have confederate ties??? If history is to be rewritten then this is just the beginning and the constitution will have to go as well. Slavery existed long before the south so at what point do we as a nation stop or move on?? This movement will tear our nation apart and divide us more than ever before. It's about winning not change. It's about what can we change next. It will never end.

Wonder if brandon will remove the statue in the center of downtown??? That will be interesting. Would love to hear the mayor comment on his stand. It would be political suicide if he says the wrong thing. Most politicians are pandering to their voters based on demographics. The smart ones are not saying a word.

Most are scared to say anything because the last vote on the issue spoke volumes. Over 60 percent voted to keep it as is. Does that make ms comprised of 68 percent racists? I don't Beleive that.

I saw a news van at the courthouse this morning and I immediately thought of the statue. I hope not was for the kids initial apearance for the double homicide and not the statue. I have a feeling they'll come after it. At what point are people not offended? I'd bet a white person was murdered while a black person was blasting rap music. Should we outlaw rap music? Is that the same or not?

Guy in Oklahoma beheads a person and attempts to behead another. No hate crime. Workplace violence. Huge double standard!!!!

That statue is coming down and it will likely cost someone a job next election if so because it's a cities decision. Could cost several jobs. Bet you won't get any alderman to comment. The problem is when one item is removed the ball gets rolling and let's see how far we can go and how much power we have and let's see how much we can get rid of without opposition. Since there are only a Handfull of states that have memorials or flags, they will all be in the national spotlight with agitators coming in to stoke flames until they accomplish what they want. It will shed a negative light on each state or city regardless.

Is Malcolm x offensive???? Anyone know his bio and what he believed?? There are a few schools and streets named after him so the street can go both ways but like usual it will not. That's is why we will be more divided than ever in the coming years. Nothing is being done to bring us together only things being brought up to tear us down. Al SHARPTON could care less how many people die every weekend in Detroit or Chicago but is licking his chops at the money to be made over the flag. Sad days ahead for EVERYONE.

On a different note. At least chickfilet sticks to its beliefs and backs down to nobody. There sales are doing just fine.
