My 2012 does not seem to consume any oil, but my 2006 consumed over a quart per 3000 miles.

I am using full synthetic oil and letting the computer tell me when to change the oil in the 2012. In the 2006 I used conventional oil and changed every 3000 or so miles.

out of warranty, but I've read numerous forums and articles on this, and GM typcally says that oil consumption up to 2- 2.25 qts per 3k miles is in spec.

I have heard of 3 fixes. Had 2 of them done on mine, and neither worked.
1. new valve covers
2. Some redesigned baffle that stops the oil from being splattered / forced into the heads when in 4 cylinder mode.
3. replace pistons and rings. This is where/when I sold my truck. It was out of warranty, and the dealer here told me I'd be better off just replacing the engine for $5700, plus fluids. But at least the new engine would have a 100K warranty on it.

To which I call complete B.S. because ZERO oil usage should be in spec. This is why they have 4 dang catalytic converters in the exhaust system so they all don't smoke while going down the road.

Ok gurus, let me ask the dumb question; I have a 2007 Tahoe with AFM and yes, I burn an extra quart between oil changes. Sure a bit of a pain to keep it topped off. Am running synthetic high mileage 5w30. Now, if I look at it this way, most higher mileage vehicles (as I have been told), will burn an extra quart between changes. So, the only problem is the $7 top-off. As of now I am okay with this situation....BUT if this scenario is going to present big problem$ in the future, then I need to consider other options. Also, I only drive 15k miles/year. So...what say ye'.

I don't know if it's related to the oil consumption issue or not but my 06 GMC that consumed over a quart of oil per 3000 miles also consumed an oil pump after about 150,000 miles.

That was fun and costly :x

New oil pump = not a huge deal. New engine = huge deal.

Interesting....my last vehicle was also an '07 F-150 Crew Cab 120k with a 5.4 Triton. Bought it used with 116k, within 9 months, replaced 4coil packs, camshaft sensors and phasers, along with a tranny re-build. A bill for $2400. Traded it in shortly thereafter for my Tahoe 4x4.

Oh don't get me wrong, I had to replace those faulty plugs that snapped off in the head myself.... but other than that no issues. That was a one time fix though
