They are now reporting that the pipe is releasing much more oil...as much as 50,000 barrels per day! At this point, I think that it is a bit premature for anyone to say anything about predictions (good or bad) about how this will turn out. The media is certainly making a big to do about things.
Here is what we know: the leak is getting worse and there is no end in site until late summer at best.
The oil community, that is comprised of a lot of lower MS, AL and LA folks, will be changed for a long time as a result of this disaster.
Update: This sounds bad...

Nobody, I repeat NOBODY knows for certain the amount coming out. The ONLY way to accurately measure flow is through a flow meter, period end of discussion. Any "calculations" based on satellite images are just a guess and no two people will come out with the same numbers, so who do you use?
Another thing people are forgetting, the bulk of this is sweet crude which will evaporate into the atmosphere. Warm water and wave action will break up the oil and further speed up the evaporation. So yes, even though it's a barrel per day leak, it doesn't mean that that same number is hitting land, as did in AK.
The media, can't stand them, but can't live without them.

...make a big bonfire??? nah, all joking aside this sucks. i live about a half mile from the beach in pascagoula so if/when this stuff hits land it will really hit home. on the plus side there are a lot of employment ops now kinda like after katrina. a girl i know is making 1600 a week after taxes. and they are paying people that have boats $400-1k a day just to be on stand by.

You chop it up and burn it as solid fuel in energy production plants. Then you actually get some benefit from the oil.

Lot's of money short-term, but long term it doesn't even get close to touching the tourism industry of Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Biloxi, Dauphin Island...

Got this off an article on a local news channel, KLFY:
In 1979, Mexico's Ixtoc I in the western Gulf blew out and spewed about 420,000 gallons of oil a day for nine months. Large quantities of oil did not reach Texas beaches.

my wife is a biologist in Biloxi but today they were out in Bayou La Batre in the boat and found numerous pelicans covered in oil. the bad thing was she and her boss couldn't do anything but notify authorities because you have to be qualified/certified to help with the animals.
