Yup and look at what they do and for what reasons! You don't see em in any pulling contest either! Nor are they long life engines! Like I said you can make horses with small cubic inch motors! Just day in day out they can't compete with cubic inches for raw power! Nor will they hold up under those extreme conditions! Look at GM's 5.4 and 6.0 liter engines . While they didn't hit the markets till around 2000 those engine designs were around back in the early 70's Tried tested and proven, but even they still can't compete for raw power! Technology has come a long way in being able to build high horsepower small cubic inch engines but If you want raw power and torque there's still no substitution for cubic inches!Chuckle12 wrote:Ever heard of Porsche & Ferrari?BR549 wrote: You right! NO SUBSTITUTION FOR GOOD OLD FASHION HORSPOWER OTHER THAN CUBIC INCHES! You can make little motors sream thru the roof! You can get both H.P. and torque figures up close to the bigger cubic inch motors but it won't perform the same. No substitution for cubic inches! If it were you would see it in racing! Ain't gonna happen! If you put that little motor in the max hp range max torque range (rpm wise) and keep it there two things are gonna happen.
1. Fuel millage is gonna go to hell in a hand basket
2. It won't make it out of it's warrenty period before a major mechanical issue!
Automakers know most people won't do this and it's their out to make products look more appealing. But for good ole fashion work you still can't beat the other. SIZE DOES matter in some things!

Re: New Ford 6 cyl. Ecoboost motor???
They create a product to sell to the masses. They don't care if the small percentage of hard core haulers, farmers, etc. buy it. Sounds like it's a great option for well over 90% of the population. My wife had a little Saab 9.3 with a 2.0 four turbocharged four cylinder and that dude would flat out fly. We ran the piss out of that thing I mean ballin' it, turbo meter pegged, grab the oh chit bar type driving all the time. Never had a single problem with it. Only had to change the oil every 15k miles and when we did it still didn't look like it had used much. So I'm not sure stressing these turbocharged motors will do them that much harm over the duration.

Re: New Ford 6 cyl. Ecoboost motor???
I think for the most part the motors are good, for the public that will use them. Majority of people will only use them to pull boats, atv, and bumper pull campers. I use to have an isuzu with a turbocharged 4 banger that could pull them. But for heavy haulin most would move up to the 6.0, or diesel. As far as farming I think I would stick with a big motor, not that the eco cant keep up, but the conditions and constant strain may be rough on anything with twin turbos. Turbos dont like all that dirt and grit. JMO
Damn, i thought I had that one

I just got a 150 with their new v-6. It is not the ecoboost, it is the base motor but it has 302 HP and has done good so far.On the highway i am getting about 20-21 can get 22 or so if you go below 65. I dont pull anything bigger than a boat or fourwheeler so big torque is not an issue, but either way this motor has rated higher HP than my old 5.7.

I saw there reviews and video on the internet and was impressed, but never truly sold until I feel it for myself. I have a 5.3 crew cab z71 and it gets 21 on the hwy with 285 70 r17 mud tires! I dont see why you would wanna change unless you just had to have a new Ford.

Latch on to a 1600 gal nurse trailer and start dragging it around the field! Plop a welder, torch, aircompressor and a couple thousand pounds of tools on the back of and then tell me just how great that eccoboost is! Won't do it! Work trucks have no place for panzi ass motors!JAMES FARMS wrote:Im going to dissagree the eccoboost is awsome I will out pull and out run any stock half ton pickup it is twice the truck my gm 5.3 was

Re: New Ford 6 cyl. Ecoboost motor???
Some of you guys are missing the point..... these ecoboost F150's have the most hp/tq for pulling in the F150. Is it a threat to the 3/4 ton or 1 ton with a Powerstroke? No. But what is does do is pull better than most much larger V8 gas motors while getting better mileage than the V8's. I have no doubt that these ecoboost F150's will outpull and get better mileage than any of the other V8's you can get in these trucks....
You guys don't believe it.... hook 8k lbs behind these trucks and compare. Torque is king when pulling. The fact that all that torque is on tap means for a given speed.... you will barely be pressing tha gas which will make the fuel consumption go down.
The hot-rodder in me loves the idea of the F150 Ecoboost. I have a 1987 Buick Grand National with a 3.8L turbo V6. From the factory.... these cars were equal or actually surpassed many of the big block muscle cars of yesteryear in 1/4 mile elapsed times.... and they get 23+ MPG to boot. I know there will be if there aren't already... people putting alky kits and chips.... and raising the boost on these F150 ecoboost trucks. I would bet there will be some in the 13's in the 1/4 while still knocking down north of 20 mpg... in a truck....and driving them daily.
If I was in the market for a new 1/2 ton right now.... whether I pulled anything occasionally or not..... it would be my first test drive.

Coming from my dad, who is an old time hot rodder, and owner of both a Porsche and a Cutlass, we often have discussions about this. these new everyday sedans(think Infinity, Nissan, etc) are making more horsepower, out of 6cyl engines and get more engine miles out of them, and hold up better than any old big or small block motor. Yes, they may not have as mush torque, but horsepower, longevity, and maiintaince beat the he!! out of older motors. Ever hear of anyone getting much more than 100k miles out of a 327/396/454?
Re: New Ford 6 cyl. Ecoboost motor???
I'll offer one quick "observation". When I began looking for a motor to build for my Grand National (I don't want to hot-rod my original numbers matching motor) I looked in junkyards for a donor V6 block with the right casting number block to be equivalent to the strength of my original '87 block. What I bought was a GM crate motor sitting on the ground at a junkyard that had the right casting number on the block and was purchased as a new replacement engine for an early '80's cutlass or something. I would guess this motor would have been installed probably late 90's... maybe even early 2000's in the car..... point is... my 159k mile motor probably had more miles on it than the junkyard motor I was looking at....but it (this junkyard motor) had a carb on it..... and I had to use a ridge reamer to knock the ridge off the cylinder walls to get the pistons out. The cylinders were worn pretty bad. My original '87 GN engine with 159k miles on the clock... when I tore it down.... had little or no ridge at the top of the block. You could still see the cross-hatching in the cylinders from it's original hone back in '87. This was a fuel injected motor.deltadukman wrote: Ever hear of anyone getting much more than 100k miles out of a 327/396/454?
My point is this.... todays motors IMHO are lasting much longer in part due to the use of fuel injection. IMHO, carb'd motors run much richer (mostly at idle and part throttle where an engine spends the majority of it's life) and the excess fuel washes the oil from the cylinder walls and makes the rings wear the cylinders at a much higher rate. IMHO.... you build a old school big block and put a multi-port EFI on it and it would last 250,000 + miles if it was taken care of....
Getting OT, but these newer motors will last and last if you take care of them.

My 2005 GMC CREW CAB has 143,000 miles on it and my tires are 285 70 r 17's Hankook MT's. I get 21 on the hwy if I keep it at the speed limit and not run the cruise cause it wants to down shift on hills and haul butt, but I have never seen a truck pull as good with a load and still get good millage. My truck is bone stock also, still got the original plugs in it.donia wrote:Roughneck33 wrote:I have a 5.3 crew cab z71 and it gets 21 on the hwy with 285 70 r17 mud tires!
what kind of mud tires are you getting 21mpg with? smaller than stock? ...and how many miles on motor to be getting that - over 50K? i'm looking at 145k and not getting anywhere near that with stock at's.
