Bought both my boys Benelli Nova youth guns in 20 gauge and they both did great with them. Oldest one just retired his last year and moved to an adult gun.

Be smart and buy an semi automatic. Kicks less and he will be less apprehensive about shooting it. Escort makes a 300 dollar youth model you can buy at Academy Sports and the action and magazine are no where as stiff as the remington so the little hands can load their own gun and are not handing it to you to load. If he shot it 3 years, costs you a hundred bucks a year. Who wouldn't spend that on their kid. I have that gun and my kids and wife love to shoot it and have for 3 years so even if it fell apart, I would be pleased with its performance. They will learn some real bad habits with an ill fitted gun or one that kicks so be smart.

My opinion...hold off on the autos till the yute is experienced with guns...how to load and unload and safely take apart for general cleaning. An auto can lob a finger slap off if its left hanging around the breach, and, give him something to drool over for a coupla seasons. Let the yute shoulder a few, he'll know what he likes...probably the MOST expensive gun on the rack....have fun with it. My first auto was a 20 gauge Smith&Wesson 1000
