I'd plant all sunflowers on a field that size.

Plus 1, scrap the sorghum and corn go all sunflowers if your only doing 3.5 acres. Its gonna take forever to plant in rows if you dont have a real planter boss. I'd broadcast, cover lightly, then spray with roundup and dual or roundup and spartan if you can afford it. Then i would forget about them til august and start mowing strips at that point. But with a field that small it wont take many strips to mow them all down.

+1 on all sunflowers but if all you have is that mix, plant it. Mow the heck out of it, disc some strips for the opener and have a barrel burner opening day. I didn't see the field was only 3.5 acres. Smoke 'em if you got 'em! :D

Did you spray beforehand??? If not you will be fighting weeds galore or get ready to spray or all your work will be for nothing.

No, like i said it was spur of the moment. This stuff is supposed to be round up ready??? we will see. planning on walking the rows with a back pack sprayer while keeping the pressure low. If it doesnt work, we'll disc it under an go back to wheat...

No such thing as rr sunflowers. Clearfield type you can spray Beyond over top. Hard to spray strips of different crops close together without damaging one or the other.

Plant sunflowers 2 seed per foot or about 4# per acre.1-1.5 pts Dual with 4 oz Spartan at planting. Fertilize with urea or nsol. Come back with Volunteer, Poast, Select or Fusilade for grasses later.

Love the landscape architect field layout.

Since your asking for advice, your plan is likely not gonna work too good. Broadcast, spray behind it with a 4 wheeler sprayer at least with roundup, better if mixed with pre emerge like mentioned before. I have been fooling with sunflowers for a long time, you can make a stand with a bag of birdseed from wal mart but without the chemical your wasting your time

I planted 13 acres with less than 50#. Do what I said do in my last post and they will be right. I planted mine last Monday. All up and looking good yesterday.

If they are not hybrids double the planting rate.

You might get 2.5 acres out of a 50# corn sack. Probably need 10# sorghum to acre. I set my planter to x seed per foot and dont worry about pounds.

What he said.. I did just what you did with chitty results. I sprayed after they came up but with pitiful results. You have to use the right chemicals before and after to achieve maximum results and if you have several different plant types planted you will harm one in the process most likely.

Pretty= expensive. I'm the kind of guy that likes to lay down on the ground in July and be able to see about 12 rows over with nothing but a picket fence of sunflower stalks and some dirt in my viewfinder.

Doesn't always happen but I try anyway. I've spent right at $112/acre by the time I get my seed in the ground and sprayed. Fertilizer is the next big chunk at about $60/acre.
