I left a graduate fellowship at UF to go to state because they have a center of excellence in IT security. Half of my profs were engineers. They were tough as nails, but in the end they made sure I knew my stuff. I didn't like it then but I sure appreciate it now. The reputation for being a no-nonsense university makes the degree more valuable. Btw - regardless of what you hear they don't abuse students, student give up on themselves.

+100 on the importance of going into a field that there wil actually be a demand for. Business school just wont cut it from what ive seen. I'm in Civil Eng. here at State right now...this semester and one more and ill be done. We have one of the best engineering programs in the country so there should be no question about the quality of education he would be getting if he came here. Of course they dont just hand out degrees so he'll have to work hard for it, but it will be well worth it in the long run!

my younger brother got his undergrad from state in biological engineering. he's a general surgeon at UAB at present and will do a fellowship in cardiothoracics next year (putting in new hearts, taking out lungs, etc).....

i can say emphatically, he eats and breaths maroon and white, and has nothing but good things to say about state and it's engineering program.....

if need be, i'll be happy to holler at him (always like hollering at him) and ask him any question you'd like.

state has an awsome engineering school, from my buds that got their degree in it. it also has one of the best pre med programs in the country (yes ranked above ole miss), or al least thats what a dr friend told me(he graduated ole miss)

whatever you do don't let him into forestry/wildlife school. way too much work for the money trouble, number of decent jobs, etc, and of this i speak from experience.

I agree that MSU has a great engineering program and there definitely is a high demand for them right now. The only problem is that MSU graduates more engineers than available jobs every year. I have my degree in Civil Engineering, but do very little work in that field. I CAN TELL YOU FROM EXPERIENCE THAT THERE IS MUCH MORE MONEY RIGHT OUT OF COLLEGE FOR OTHER DEGREES. For example, you can get a pharmacy degree (which has twice the demand than engineers) and start out at > $100K. It only takes 18 more months than engineering, and that is assuming you get an engineering degree in 4 years (which very few do). I have sent you a pm with my phone # if you have any questions. I would be happy to help. Oh by the way, I have a co-op working for me now who is in Mechanical Engineering graduating in December 2011. It may be good to get them together.
