one of our members shot a big buck this weekend at 492 yards. crazy i know but it was with a 7 mm ultra mag with 20 power mil dot scope. he was sitting by a big tire on an irrigation pivot. he uses a bi pod trigger stick on the back of gun and a trigger stick tripod on the front. he missed the buck the first shot and somehow knew that he shot over him the first time and then adjusted his aim and killed him on the second shot. there were other members hunting that helped him load the deer and saw the range so it can happen. I killed a doe this past weekend with a 7mm mag hornady sst superformance 162 grain at 300 yards. THat is the longest shot on a deer i have ever made. Not sure I could do a 500 yard shot or that i would try.

I've killed numerous deer in the 450 plus range and wouldn't hesitate taking a 450 to 500 yard shot under the RIGHT conditions. But get a crosswind or a hot day when you can see gremilins in the scope? No way! I handload everything I shoot and spend quite a bit of time on my guns making sure they are capable of making those kind of shots though. Big difference in trying to take a factory off the shelf gun with factory loads and doing it vs taking a well tuned gun with great handloads and trying it. Go to the range and set up on 3 4 and 500 yard targets and see just what you get. Shoot everything over a chrony and record it. It will really suprise you! Most gun manufacturers will guarantee 1 MOA groups @ 100 yds but none will go beyond that because of the varibles. Everything must be consistant in order to shoot that out at long ranges. If I can get within a 6 to 7 inch circle @ 500yds I feel thats as close as Im gonna get without doing extensive work to my gun. I also feel that's close enough to practice and sight my gun in for those ranges. Otherwise you just wasting your time. 2 or 3 bullets being off 2 to 250 fps is all the difference it takes to turn a 6 in group to a 12 to 15 inch group at 500 yds. I have yet to see a box of factory ammo inside of 2 to 250 fps variation.

Thanks for the info.....
I've got two spots that I've been seeing a buck come out, but it's 450yds to one spot and 530 to the other from my stand....

About 400 to 450 yds.
