Linatone works great. Get it at Tractor Supply or some of the other pet stores. Pour a little on dog food. I use a quality food (Enhance Pro Athlete) but my dog still has dry skin and sheds. The Linatone really helps. Costs around $13 but it lasts a month or more.

Use a furminator. You can get a new one on ebay for less than $10. Be careful brushing the backbone with it as it can cut them up pretty good and cause scabbing.

Get you a squirt bottle and mix 2 parts water, 1 part Mane N'Tail conditioner, 1 part Cure Care Skin and Hair Conditioner (Sally Beauty supply-local or online). Spray the hair 3 times a week and brush it backwards with a regular brush. No need to rinse it out. Makes them smell better, hair shines, and the shedding is reduced. Dog likes the brushing too.

A lot of it is the color of the dog. Color is just light reflection. Light is gonna reflect differently off a black dog. Light won't reflect the same off a yellow dog. You don't see yellows that shine like blacks. Some chocolates will shine like that too. In the chocolate lines there are skin problems and that will show up depending on the bloodline some of those have the least shine very dry hair. I just bought a chocolate that shines like a new penny, doesn't matter what I do. It's the bloodline. That said, I'm with the bacon grease, other oils like safflower, eggs are great tho I cook them first. There is a product called 'the missing link' that's mighty good for putting the coat in very good condition. Brushing helps a lot. Tractor supply has a product called Miracle Groom made for horses, but can be used for almost any pet. It really works removes the dirt and the stink, you don't need to bathe a lab very often and the coat will shine afterward. I use it on every dog even the puppies. Thyroid problems will affect the hair too. Too much fish oil will give very loose stool so you might try some of those other things first or just feed some sardines instead.

Is it food or something else? I have never been able to buy the most expensive food but I dont feed the worst either. Her coat just never seems to get that shine like other dogs do.
