Get a 4wd.

zero turn mowers have their place, but their place is yards and only yards that are smooth. Any kind of "rough" yard and they will beat you to death enough to slow you down and have to take longer to cut the yard. For the price you will pay for a zero turn, you will get an equal tractor and have more use out of the tractor. I'm in the market for a diesel UTV, but at the price they want for them, I can buy a used 30HP or so 4wd with a FEL and get way more use out of the tractor than the UTV.


I would certainly stick with a 30hp tractor for the fact that you can go anywhere with it and haul it anywhere you want to easily.

If its for yard use you will probablly be more pleased with the smaller hp, but if you will be doing much at lease or heavy discing it just won't be enough. We have had several that used theirs for mowing tade for 757 with upgraded seat. The loaders come in real handy. I usually wont order them with the belly mowers as they can be added but not good for other applications a finish mower is my preference.

My second choice would be kubota.

I have a little low end Mahindra that I bought with all implents for about $9k. It had less than 100 hrs and I use it for pretty much everything you are wanting to do. It does not have a loader. Kubotas are great but you are going to spend several $k more and the grass will be mowed the same, the dirt will look the same turned, and seed will still be spread the same.

It's a finance company that many of the Mahindra and Branson dealers use. The repo the units people don't make payments on and auction them. It sort of like ebay for Ag equipment. You can get some reasonable deals if you don;t want to buy new.

For around the yard, 30hp will be plenty. 4wd will give you the performance of about 40% more hp for ground engaging jobs -- it's amazing on compact tractors and a must if you want a bucket. Also make sure to have your rear tires filled with fluid. Go to your dealers and drive a few around. And I'm also partial to the Kubotas.

Visit the forums tractorbynet.com. There is more info there on buying, owning, and operating tractors than you'll get anywhere else on the www. Especially on their kubota forums there are tons of guys that have tractors for exactly the same purposes as you stated. Alot of them like the B series Kubotas.

i have a new holland 4x4 TC40 with a front end loader....if you get a front end loader in a small tractor you will need it to be 4x4. I like mine but would not hesitate to go with a Mahindra or Kubota or some of the other brands if I found a good deal. I would stay away some of the "no" name brands and John Deere are only good for resale. I would get at least 40 horse. A friend of mine had a 30 horse John Deere and it just didnt have enough booty to do much.

Kubota is a decent tractor

it will never do what a John Deere, Case or New Holland will from a longevity stand point (my opinion so FWIW)

They are just not built for heavy duty day in and day out use..

John Deere 3720 (44 HP) 4x4 with a front end loader... Do anything you want to do with it.. Looks way better than those old Kubota's and... Wait it's a John Deere!
