Well your entitled to your own opinion by all means if you don't want kill them don't. I don't go out of my way to, but if one slithers his way up on my doorstep it will get dealt with.

I think you meant 40 types of water snakes, not water mocassins. A Water Mocassin will kill you dead brotha man. Me personally I ain't takin no chances and that critter in the picture above looks like he's got a fairly triangular head. Which if it were around my house especially on my deck would be a deceased individual. Just my .02 but what do I know.

I was working my dog on a pond here on campus and had a snake take a shot at my dog. She was in mid air when I caught this object in the bottom of my eye lash forward. It almost caught her hind leg then before I could try and kill it, it slithered into the lake. I don't know much about em. It was about 1.5 ft long, had a pattern similar to the on in the picture. About an inch thick or so. But it all happened so quickly.

Scared me though. The bible says we will crush their heads and they will bruise our heels. That ole book has got some true statements in it.

A dead snake is the best kind of snake.

No I meant WATER MOCASSINS! Only the two breeds of cottonmouth the copperhead and what some people refer to as the "pigmy rattler" are the only poisionous water mocassins we have here in MS. The rest are NON POISIONOUS! All your "water snakes" ARE water mocassins

I'm with you on this one, Mr. Samples. Moccasin is just a term that refers to snakes in general. The ones that live in and near water then are "Water Moccasins". Most folks, though, think this only applies to cottonmouths.

Exactly! There is even one out there with a Diamond shaped head that is not poisionous. It's called the Diamond Back WATER MOCASSIN! He is seldom seen, looks just like a rattle snake and very seldom ever comes out of large bodies of water. The only way to tell the difference in him and his poisinous cousins is the shape of his eyes! I've only seen a couple of these in over 50 years of hunting and fishing but they are here!

It's a diamond back water snake. Take a look at those taxonomy websites above. There is actually no snake witht the name WATER MOCASSIN! It is a common name referring to cottonmouths. Some people call all water snakes water mocassins because they can't tell the difference. Oh by the way, the snake in the picture is definitely not a pigmy rattlesnake.

Getting into the whole shape of the eyes thing is a little more than I'm gonna worry with to save a snakes life. How close do you have to be to tell the difference? Would you be in striking distance?

I'm not a big fan of snakes, but agree that is a Midland brown snake and is about as harmless as they come. My neighbor's cat finds them in my yard all the time and has a ball with them until the snake has no more play left in it.

I ain't a big fan of snakes either, and I'm not gonna take the effort to get real close to see the whites of their eyes before using a 12 gauge.
