3.5's w/ a pair of fleece waderpants will work fine for me down to about 15 degrees

I have both. I don't wear the 5mm pair unless it's real cold and I'm not walking anywhere. They're way too hot. I hunted several days this year when the temperature was in the teens. The 5mm's didn't make it out of the basement all year. 3.5's were fine.
3.5's are plenty durable. They'll tear if you hit something right but if you're careful and/or lucky they'll last fine.

Go commando in 5mm waders to cut back on body heat. The Coleman camping website has really cheap prices on hunting waders, for those who buy cheap equipment.
