If you ever want something really nice try and Anschutz .22. I use one for squirrel hunting and they are very nice shooting guns, and also full size as opposed to the 10/22.

I have a 10/22 and love it. But years ago my mom bought my dad a Anschutz "Woodchucker" and that is an awesome little gun. Either on is a solid buy.

Why might someone need something like this?

Why might someone NEED a .22 at all? Or to hunt at all? It's just an enhancement. Doesn't spook the other squirrels/game nearby. I can shoot 3 crows behind my house before they realize what's going on. No hearing protection needed for target shooting, and no disturbing the neighbors. My Savage bolt .22 with Wolf match target sounds like a daisy red-ryder. I think they should be REQUIRED on all rifles, and with no fees/paperwork. Don't knock it 'til you've tried it!

The Anschutz is a heckuva gun, different league really, but for economical tack drivers the little bolt action "squirrel gun" from marlin is a great little gun, as are the cz 22's.

If you are yearning for an auto, I have no experience with the 597, but I'm not impressed with any gun remington produces lately. I have been thrilled with my T/C benchmark, but that may be more than you want to spend, but it will flat shoot (the factory trigger pull sucked though, and does on most 22's you may want to factor in a trigger job).

I also like the 10/22's but in my experience they aren't very accurate out of the box...you need to customize them to get good accuracy from what I've seen.... Then again I guess it depends on whether you are talking accuracy to hit a squirrels head at 75 yards every shot, or 25 yards. I tend to go for the 75+ yard standard.... The old marlin model 60's will shoot well too, but are a step behind the customized 10/22's and the T/C auto's

Just my 2 cents, but if you want an auto and want to buy an erector set gun, get the 10/22 and you have a new hobby of how to customize your gun, if you want to buy a gun that will run with the customized 10/22's out of the box the Benchmark has been great in my experience, but not cheap. If you want the most accuracy for your dollar I think the marlin bolt action "squirrel gun" is probably king if you don't mind a bolt action.

Hearing protection and to not bother the neighbors are two compelling reasons I can think of. And simply because you can. I've killed 11 beaver with mine over the past month at night. Two of them were in the same pond and the second one never even heard me shooting his buddy. If he did, it didn't bother him?

Besides that, it's really a lot of fun. If you don't hit the limb, or something else that makes a lot of noise when it hits, you can keep shooting at a squirrel until you hit him. I did that with my pistol the other day.

Have I convinced you yet? I could go on....

I've got a Browning auto 22 and a Ruger 10/22. No threads on the Browning. Ruger gets my vote because of the availability of parts. I put a Volquartsen hammer kit in mine which really gave it a smooth trigger pull. If I ever feel like I need a better trigger, I can add a Volquartsen sear too.

i shoot a savage have a 17hmr and a 22 love them both wont find a better grouping factory gun anywhere the only way to beat it is with a custom built

I have a tricked out 10/22 and it is by far my favorite gun, and i have quite a collection. I have killed many cans, bottles, and critters with it. Buy the 10/22 and be done with it, if you want anything different just start swapping parts the list is endless
