In all likelihood, it wasn't the lawyer's fault. The lawyer's title search only reveals matters recorded in the property records. The garbage bill wouldn't be of record until Waste Management sues you for the unpaid debt, gets a judgment against you in court, and enrolls the judgment in the land rolls. If all of that happened and the lawyer missed the judgment in the judgment rolls, then the lawyer messed up. If not, she didn't. And either way, you owe the money for any garbage fees incurred while you owned the house.

I take it this is a bill for garbage pickup. If so, typically you owe for services up to the day of closing and the purchaser owes for any services after closing. Now in saying that, if you had an agreement directly with waste management it is your responsibility to have that service stopped on the day of closing. If you failed to contact waste management or any of the utility companies to have that service cut off on the day of closing then it is your loss as it was your responsibility.

You say you pay this service when you pay your tag. Where do you go to pay?
