Some of you folks need to take deep breath and relax. There are NO plans to eliminate the nickname "Rebels" or the term of endearment "Ole Miss". Each will appear on UM's brand new multi-million dollar turf in VHS for at least the next ten years. So, the "slippery slope" paranoids among us can relax.
The ONLY change being considered is an updated version of our mascot "Colonel Rebel", which first appeared on the cover of a 1938 Ole Miss yearbook ---- I personally knew the gentleman who created the Col Reb caricature, and served him many a milkshake at the soda fountain of my family's drugstore in the Delta. He was as surprised as anyone that the caricature eventually became a near-official mascot of UM. The Col was not designed to be a sports mascot. This fine gentleman passed away several years ago, but if he were still alive, I doubt that he would be offended by any proposed updates of the mascot he created. Folks, an old
Southern gentleman with a cane named "Colonel" just does not strike fear into UM's opposition or inspire anyone to do anything but take a nap. I would prefer a a more agile, mobile, and hostile mascot ---a rampaging beast actually --which would inspire one to destroy the enemy.
Those who are not UM fans or alumni have no iron in this fire ---sorry to hurt your feelings, but the truth is the truth. UM does not need to be nor can afford to be the battleground for any more wars, debates, etc of old South symbols. Every other school in the SEC that used to have such symbols has long since abandoned them. And those same schools use them against UM in recruiting. I am a proud southerner, born and raised in the MS Delta, with ancestors who fought in the Civil War with the Confederate army, and I will always treasure and privately display in my home the artifacts from that era handed down to me by my ancestors, and will always honor their service to their states and the South against the northern agressors invading our homeland, but I also realize that there is a time and place for everything, and the 21st century and sporting events on the UM campus are not the time and place. All things change ----and the proposed changes are the right thing to do for UM.
BTW, the matters mentioned in the CL article are of little or no consequence ---a combination of old news and no news, apparently just thrown out to appease the MSU crowd desperate for something to ease the pain, even at others' expense. Hint: rather than obsess about the nose hair protruding from UM's nose, why not worry about the forest growing out of your own. IF I were you, I would be thinking about a regime change, sooner than later, unless your idea of fun is going down with the captains of a sinking ship. Just a thought --- I will say no more since I have no iron in that fire --thank goodness.
