I'll bet us State fans can come up with a few suggestions on new mascots! :D
Just kidding. I really hate to hear that. It is a Mississippi tradition, even if it is Ole Miss. What about the UNLV Rebels? Does the NAACP want them to change too?

In Nevada, Rebel proabably means a Rebel who wins alot of money gambling. Its Lala Land out there.

Unfortunately, in Mississippi, people assume what it actuall is.

Here's the deal...I dont care what the symbol is or what the mascot looks like...I care about winning...Sure its great when we win and Colonel Rebel is jumping around after the game and I've got my Rebel flag flying on my attena and I'm listening to the Allman Brothers on the drive home, but I'd rather win more and have my symbols less...I can always fly my Rebel flag after the game. hang it up in my garage, take it to NASCAR races, etc...

If Khayat, Boone, Cut and Barnes say the Rebel name and Colonel Rebel mascot prevents us from signing the best athletes which in turn prevents us from winning, then I hold them to that...Meaning that if we change the symbols, we damn sure better win and win big...

Since I graduated from Ole Miss in the early 80s, we have expanded and enhanced our stadium, built new weight training, indoor practice and other facilities, reworked the Tad Pad, greatly expanded our coaching staff and greatly increased our coaches pay, yet we havent won squat and our coaches hide behind the "Rebel" symbol excuse....It is put up or shut up time...We change the name and the mascot and we better win big NOW or all of them (Khayat, Boone, Cutcliffe and Barnes) are out...

As for the name "Ole Miss" that is off the table...I'll go for the "Ole Miss Black Bears" or the "Ole Miss Blues" or something like that, but I wont stand for dropping the name "Ole Miss"- that would be going too far...That would be like dropping Hotty Toddy because it has a couple of cuss words in it...

Another consideration is that we- the South- fought a lost cause and got our arses beat...We took on the frigging US Army and got creamed... There is no way to dance around the fact that WE LOST...Why associate a sports program with the losing side of something?

I know my family heritage well and I am very proud that my grandaddy's grandaddy was a Brig General in the Confederacy and that my grandaddy's daddy (from Gainesville, AL) road with Forrest during the War and was in business with him after the War, but the fact is we lost...
I ramrod two different hunting clubs (one near Raymond, the other near Redwood) where Civil War battles were fought and have named the clubs in honor of the soldiers that fought and died on the same hallowed ground that I am privileged to hunt and spill blood on, but all that being said, I am damn tired of MEDIOCRITY in Ole Miss sports...If dropping the Rebel name and mascot means winning BIG, I am all for it.

i really dont think changing our mascot will change anything as far as winning and LOSING...and going from Col Reb to Blues or Bluesmen is a bit drastic. dont ya think...just my 2 cents!!!

If you are right, that the name change wont mean more wins, then we can fire the whole damn bunch that keep taking our money and not winning...In other words, no more excuses...Either win or you are out...

Ole Miss is one of the better academic schools in the South...Dont believe it? Look at our alumni...Doctors, lawyers, politicians, business people of significant accomplishment so why are we average in sports? Because we ACCEPT being average. Well I'm sick of it. Changing the symbols allows us- the fan base- to hold our coaches accountable.

If Miami can win big, then so can Ole Miss. If Notre Dame can win big, then so can Ole Miss. Both schools have fewer students than Ole Miss.

I hate to say it...but fire the whole lot of them now for all I care. The last real season that we had IMO was when we got the $#!+ kicked out of us at the Gator bowl. I think that Jim Beam still came in glass bottles back then   . Ahhh the smell of flat coke, cheap whiskey, a young lady, sweat, and victory in VH brings back some great memories. Hate to admit that I have grown complacent about winning over the years...but I have. I would love to see the Rebs WIN!!!

BUT as far as Col Reb goes...he's a cartoon like version of the stern Col Reb mascot of yester year. If you try to soften the appearence any more, you might as well have bugs bunny running around on the field. How can anyone find that offensive? The flag I can understand and with much self debate on the subject, I gave in....did it get us a better starting line up...NO. If a kid is the type to get offended by a friggin cartoon, then they aren't really going to have a good time in Oxpatch anyway. Tell him (or her) to go somewhere else.

The new additions to the stadium require that seat be sold to folks wanting to see the games. There's alot of butt real estate up there and I think if there are more bad seasons, the bottom line will prompt change. My .02.

Some of you folks need to take deep breath and relax. There are NO plans to eliminate the nickname "Rebels" or the term of endearment "Ole Miss". Each will appear on UM's brand new multi-million dollar turf in VHS for at least the next ten years. So, the "slippery slope" paranoids among us can relax.

The ONLY change being considered is an updated version of our mascot "Colonel Rebel", which first appeared on the cover of a 1938 Ole Miss yearbook ---- I personally knew the gentleman who created the Col Reb caricature, and served him many a milkshake at the soda fountain of my family's drugstore in the Delta. He was as surprised as anyone that the caricature eventually became a near-official mascot of UM. The Col was not designed to be a sports mascot. This fine gentleman passed away several years ago, but if he were still alive, I doubt that he would be offended by any proposed updates of the mascot he created. Folks, an old
Southern gentleman with a cane named "Colonel" just does not strike fear into UM's opposition or inspire anyone to do anything but take a nap. I would prefer a a more agile, mobile, and hostile mascot ---a rampaging beast actually --which would inspire one to destroy the enemy.

Those who are not UM fans or alumni have no iron in this fire ---sorry to hurt your feelings, but the truth is the truth. UM does not need to be nor can afford to be the battleground for any more wars, debates, etc of old South symbols. Every other school in the SEC that used to have such symbols has long since abandoned them. And those same schools use them against UM in recruiting. I am a proud southerner, born and raised in the MS Delta, with ancestors who fought in the Civil War with the Confederate army, and I will always treasure and privately display in my home the artifacts from that era handed down to me by my ancestors, and will always honor their service to their states and the South against the northern agressors invading our homeland, but I also realize that there is a time and place for everything, and the 21st century and sporting events on the UM campus are not the time and place. All things change ----and the proposed changes are the right thing to do for UM.

BTW, the matters mentioned in the CL article are of little or no consequence ---a combination of old news and no news, apparently just thrown out to appease the MSU crowd desperate for something to ease the pain, even at others' expense. Hint: rather than obsess about the nose hair protruding from UM's nose, why not worry about the forest growing out of your own. IF I were you, I would be thinking about a regime change, sooner than later, unless your idea of fun is going down with the captains of a sinking ship. Just a thought --- I will say no more since I have no iron in that fire --thank goodness.

Apparently, I am a prophet. Check out todays's sports page in the NE MS Daily Journal, for an update on proposed changes to UM mascot "Col. Reb" and re recent CL article re NCAA and UM. The phone card deal has been dealt with. There is nothing to the reported grade change matter. The alleged "changes" involving many students took place in 2001 when the future Rebel recruit Banks was just a junior. Moreover, the high school administrator that made the changes has now been cleared of any wrongdoing (per local paper in Amite County), will be reinstated to his job with back pay, and characterized the changes as necessary to correct grade errors caused by switching to a new computer system. Apparently, the Amite County HS simply did not have its $#!+ together --nothing sinister --just incompetence. Just reporting the truth. No spin. Just the facts. Can you handle the truth?

Leave Col. Sanders alone. Let him cheer for UM during the day and sell chicken at night, doesn't bother me a bit. Seriously, let Col. Reb stay. I here Alabama is considering changing their name to the "table dancers". Gonna get a new brass pole put in the coaches office for when recruits come to t-town.

Leave Col. Reb the hell alone, he's tradition....

The recruiting isn't the problem, it's the sorry booty coaches they have up there....

They suck so they want to blame it on Col. Reb, gimme a break....

Just my opinion....

Just for the record, I'm not a Ms. State or Southern fan either but I want the big three to do good every year....[/b]

As long as Alabama is changing their masot to a strip dancer, Ole Piss and M$U should just change their's as well. What does it matter anyways? Both of them will still be Bama's little brothers forever.
