There is nothing wrong with your mount, let me say that 1st. It looks symetrical, feather work looks correct, the bird looks to be clean and free.....But I thinks what duckter is saying is that it is just a standard flying mount. That's OK, alot are done that way....Most people do this if they don't have something in mind for their bird when they take it to their TAXI. When he says that it is lifeless and with no purpose that's something you have to ask for in my opinion. Take a picture out of you DU or Delta Waterfowl magizines that you want to mimic and any TAXI worth his salt will do a fine job giving you that LOOK. I cut out pictures and log them under species to have for doing Taxidermy. With all this said, THERE IS ABSOULTLY NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR MOUNT!!!!!!!!!
duckter wrote:Not to pee on your parade, but I'm not that impressed with the mount. Seems like it's a bit "lifeless" to a degree. Now, I've got some that fit into that category as well since I opted for a taxidermist that was not especially know for his art. Recently, however, I have decided that if I am going to pay for a mount, I'll save enough to have it done by one of the best.

Case in point, a few years ago, I had a drake pintail done and I was pleased with the work. My brother-in-law had one mounted the year after by a guy in Little Rock. The difference is unbelievable. His appears to be flying with a purpose, while mine has wings spread, head turned and is mounted to a piece of driftwood.

I would encourage all to look at the work by Shane Smith of Stevenson, AL (DR2 can attest). His website is: http://www.waterfowltaxidermy.com

I had him do a sitting Drake Canvasback for me a few years ago and it is awesome.

I do know this, if I cannot afford to send a bird to Shane, I'll wait until I can.

Great bird though on the Black Mallard...that is one of the only I have yet to kill. That and a Cinnamon Teal.

I think that blackducks can be harder to mount than other birds. It doesn't really have alot of selling points. Dark feathers, green bill, and dark blue/purple speculum. If you are trying to show off the high points of a bird then you have a harder time with a blackduck. Espically when you compare it to a drake woody, or pintail, drake mallet ect.

Now I understand the birds are rare which is reason enough to get one mounted. It was all the reason I needed. Many people get birds mounted as a statement of saying "I killed one of these" another reason to get one mounted is to show off what makes the black duck a blackduck. Meaning the mount has to show off the sellling points or unique charecteristics. Sometimes it is hard to do both esp when you only have a dark speculum to work with.

Next blackduck I get mounted will be standing with one wing outstreched. Doing the preening thing.

I think your mount is fine.

Good looking! In fact, I'm taking the first hen shovelor of the year to him! If he can make that look good, He is a master indeed!

No kidding, nice bird.

I thought it was mounted on the chair as a homage to internet scouts. Sit in a chair in front of a computer and shoot away! :P

Thought I would add one for comparison. Mine is about 10 years old and please excuse all the dust. I should have my rear kicked for not taking better care of it, but it's hung in my office so I don't do much cleaning up there. This mount was done by Burroughs Taxidermy in Brinkley, AR. He has done a few for me and I really like how he adds life to his duck mounts. The most important thing about a mount is whether or not YOU like it and are satisfied with it. I have always been pretty fond of this mount.
