The last time I went to a Redbirds game(at night) I tried to save a couple of dollars and park and walk. They stole everything, but my cell phone because it was in my pocket, even stole my baby seat in the back seat. I lived in New Orleans for 14 months after Katrina and downtown Memphis has more crime than downtown NO. I currently live in Collierville, TN. Don't you watch the news. Shoot out yesterday, all over downtown chasing each other shootin. I'm ready to move back in MS
I live downtown. The main thing that irks me is the panhandlers. That shootout was on summer, by the way. I guess my point is that downtown is not a bad neighborhood. Every night there are lots and lots of tourists walking all over the place. In my opinion, it would be a much better experience to stay downtown and see everything then have to drive back and forth to desoto county.

DO NOT MISTAKE CONCERN FOR FEAR!!! If I was scared, I damn sure wouldn't be going. BUT, I'm not an idiot either. I know there are places in every large town that visitors do not need to go, especially if you have an attractive well built lady on your arm. I am not going looking for trouble, but if comes at me, I will not hesitate to blast a hole in his ass! I just asked a simple question, where is a nice safe place to stay. And true to form, most of the guys on here anwered my questions for me and made some good suggestions.
If I wanted YOUR opinion on anything else, I would have asked for it.

If you are going to be carrying I am sure you will be staying away from places that serve alcohol (not many of those on Beale).
Do they have metal detectors or something, seriously I don't know. Wife and I went to NO in May and I carried every place we went except the aqaruim.

I guess it's the areas around downtown I'm really talking about. The out skirts of downtown that filter in the crime. I have just had some bad experiences downtown with democrats, panhandlers, cops, etc. I just don't like some of the areas off Beale. That shootout ended up on summer as you know, but went on for blocks. Hell today they had a triple shooting in uptown 1 dead

My wife and I spent a weekend in Memphis a couple of weekends ago for our aniversary and had no problems. We stayed at the Westin downtown right across from the Fed-Ex forum and right behind Silky's. It's a very nice hotel and a little pricey for me, but well worth it. Ate lunch at Rendezvous then went to the zoo Friday afternoon, ate super at Texas De Brazil and went out on Beal that night. Got up Sat. morning and ate at the starbucks in the hotel lobby, did a little window shopping that morning, ate lunch at the Flying Saucer, caught a Red Birds game that afternoon, and ate super at Ground Zero(only about 50ft from the hotel entrance). Packed up and checked out by 10 Sun. morning and the car never left the hotel parking garage the whole weekend. Nothing missing, and the only guy with his hand out was the valet.

Big Steve,
Not sure if last response was aimed at me or not, if so guess I need to say sorry for initial post. I live here and thought your were asking for opinions. Guess it is just that I hear people talk about how bad downtown is but then they want to go to Forum, Beale St, AutoZone, Mud Island, etc. Unfortunately have to take good w/ bad. Downtown is probably like most urban downtown areas, places to be and not be-that is why I said I would recommend parking/staying in reputable hotel there rather than have to drive back & forth. Also was trying to let you know security (police & some private) is pretty tight around bars there and carrying could be good in some instances and not in others.
If post came out bad, my bad.

I always stay at the hotel directly across the front entrance to the PEabody. I think it's a Holiday Inn, It shares the alley with Rendevous (MSP). I'll be honest, I have been going to Memphis with my wife since 1996, staying right there, walking anywhere I want and have never had any problem.
My humble opinion is that I wouldn't go and try to enjoy Memphis and drive to Southhaven every night. Shoot, time you drive to downtown, find a place to park, drive abck to Southhaven, you've probably taken close to 3 hours out of your time, not to mention possibility of a DUI. Just not worth it. Again, maybe that's because I haven't exeprienced what everybody else has. But I would also bet I have spent as much or more time there than most of the people on this board other than the guys that live in the area.

I go to Memphis with customers about once every three months. We usually stay at the Hampton Inn near Beale or the Holiday Inn across from the Peabody......do all the normal stuff downtown, day and night.....been doing it for about 10 years now and never had an issue with me personally or my possessions.

If you really want to impress her, stay at the River Inn at Harbor Town
http://www.riverinnmemphis.com/It is an awesome bed and breakfast. And the restaurant (
Currents )is top notch.
It is on Mud Island, not 5 minutes from Beale
