Yea Reward is the shelf name for Diquat.... it will do the job for sure, but at $295 for 2 1/2 gallons, when it takes one gallon to treat 1 acre, dont know if it is worth it in a duck hole... also when you have duck weed, most of the time there will be water mill in with the duckweed too and Reward will not kill water mill

We also have the same problem near the same area. Dont seem to bother the Gads but fewer mallards are taken now that it is so thick. They have also opened more field hunting in the area that could have given the mallards other options. I have spoken with a biologist from state and he states that it is very high in protein and carbs, but I haven't ever seen them sucking it up. All I can figure is that the run off of fertilizer each year makes it grow thicker. If you can get an early frost it will thin it out. We have no way to cut off an area to attempt to kill it. Its a losing battle. It will eat up a small outboard. We have gone to mud motors to keep from the hassle of cleaning out piss holes on the motors.

What time of year would be best to spray Reward?

i tell you what else will kill it 2-4-D and mix in a little (surfacton) i think thats how you spell it. surfacton will help the chemical stick to the vegetation. that will knock it's dick in the dirt

Ducks do like it but when the stuff is stacked in a brake over an inch thick its tough for for em to land or even get around. When it grows that thick other plants, like widgeon grass which is a submersed species, can't grow.

I look at it as going to a buffet, would you rather go to a buffet with only fried chicken or one with chaken, an gizzards, an watermellon, with a cooler of faygo drinks :D

For most species of wildlife the more food options you have the better.

ITS DIFFERENT THAN WIGEON GRASS. ITS THAT STUFF THAT LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE LAID DOWN GREEN CARPET ON TOP OF YOUR HOLE. ITS ACTUALLY LITTLE SEEDS THAT ACUMMULATE AND FLOAT ON TOP OF THE WATER. YOU SEE IT ALL THE TIME IN THE CYPRESS, I DON'T THINK IT GROWS IN SALTWATER MARSHES, AT LEAST I HAVE NEVER SEEN IT ANYWHERE BUT IN THE CYPREES WHERE I'M FROM. I HAVE ALSO KILLED PLENTY OF BIRDS OVER IT, BUT I GUESS SOME PEOPLE DON'T LIKE IT.

Duckweed is a very fine grain-like plant that grows on top of the water surface. There is common duckweed (Lemna minor) and giant duckweed (Spirodella polyrriza). Watermeal is another plant that looks very similar to duckweed but not. Ducks will eat duckweed but it shades out other plants that grow from under the water that ducks may also like. Reward (diquat) will kill it but it is only a contact herbicide. Best thing is to use a contact then a systemic like Sonar (fluridone) to get rid of it. Alligatorweed is a nonnative weed that has no value to a duck. All it does is take over areas, prevent boat access, decrease oxygen in the water, and so on. I would tell you how to kill it but I have to legally tell you to contact my aquatic weeds professor. Dr. John Madsen at Mississippi State University, 662-325-2428, jmadsen@gri.msstate.edu.
