rat snake = chicken snake

Rat snake is the term most herps use, but it is the same thing as what most Southerners call a chicken snake. They eat eggs, birds and rodents, hence the variation in common names. It was probably the most common snake to raid backyard chicken coops back in the old days, so most folks down here call it the chicken snake.
But people have so many names for things. A black dude that works at the shop by my house calls a yellow cat (flathead) a bottom cat.

I used to have one when I lived in the e house. About 5 feet long and so thick I couldn't get both hands around it (fed it 2 hamsters a week). Used to be a set time I fed him each week so everyone could watch in anticipation. And yes, it was impressive to see how quick and hard it struck! Lil eyeballs bulging from being squeezed so hard....
