Good news!

Fortunately venemous snakebites rarely are life threatening. In humans the chance of death is way less than 1%. Probably around 1 in a thousand.

I don't know if the death rate is higher in dogs but it seems likely since they are smaller.

Anyone considered the vaccines for their dogs?

Glad your dog is OK?

Had a friend lose a top notch squirrel dog. Dog was barking and snake got him inside the mouth. Died before they could get him out of the woods. I have had several bitten and just give them plenty of benadryl and they have been fine. When I coon hunted I always kept the benadrly in my vest.

Had a very close call with one about 5 or so years ago. She got bit on the muzzle area by a copperhead late in the evening while training. Rushed to animal hospital, the after hours place off of High Street, with very swollen face and labored breathing. Got the shot and two hours later headed for home.

Bill, we considered the anti venom, but the vet just couldn't give us the awnser that it would definetly work. She also said about half the time the anti venom shows no effect. Therefore we decided against the $500. Now that being said, we had to leave her with them for observation, and we told her if things looked like they were going down hill to give the antivenom if needed.
